Every organization needs someone who knows where the hazards are, keeps the team ready for surprise boss battles, and makes sure the rules donโ€™t stay trapped in the instruction manual. At GHS, that player is

Over the past two years, Jesse has advanced from Maintenance to Health, Safety, and Compliance, building programs, strengthening systems, and helping GHS meet AKOSH standards along the way.

Today, he keeps GHS inspection-ready by coordinating inspections, monitoring safety training and drills, tracking incident reports, and preparing for state and federal audits. He also managed the Weekend Student Food Program during its first year, making it a successful and fully operational program.

Jesseโ€™s favorite part of the job is working with GHS staff and helping the organization level up. He takes pride in maintaining high standards that the whole team can feel good about.

His approach to compliance is summed up by one of his favorite quotes:
โ€œCanโ€™t build a roof with spaghetti.โ€
The lesson? Strong results require the right materials: solid systems, proper training, reliable documentation, and a little preparation before the next challenge appears.

When Jesse isnโ€™t helping GHS avoid compliance traps, heโ€™s usually hiking, working on cars, or playing board games, because apparently, even his downtime involves strategy, problem-solving, and the occasional difficult campaign.

Whether youโ€™re navigating a safety question, preparing for an inspection, or trying to decode the rules, Jesse is ready to help the team avoid unnecessary damage and make it to the next level.

Hay is for Horses, Kay is for KIBBY!

While Kibby has held a few different roles at GHS, she is now serving as the Reentry Case Management Administrative Assistant. She joined the agency in 2022 and is coming up on her fifth year, proof that sheโ€™s been in the saddle and making a difference for quite some time. Kibby is a true utility player and a multi-functional member of the GHS team. She has been cross trained in multiple departments so she can provide extra support wherever sheโ€™s needed. Talk about being ready to rein things in when the team needs her!

One of her favorite parts of her work is collaborating with the Reentry Team. She values being part of the process that helps people rebuild their lives, one step at a time. Watching a resident grow through the programs, gain confidence, and thrive in the community is something she considers priceless. To Kibby, progress may not always happen at a gallop. Sometimes itโ€™s a slow walk, a steady trot, or even a moment to stop and regroup. But every step forward matters, and sheโ€™s proud to help residents find their footing along the way.

When sheโ€™s not on campus, you can often find Kibby at the stables surrounded by horses. And when sheโ€™s not horsing around, she stays busy with dirt biking, camping, hunting, crocheting, coaching wrestling, and traveling. Sheโ€™s a busy woman, an even busier momma, and clearly not afraid to take the reins on life.

One of her favorite quotes is, โ€œthe journey of a thousand miles starts with one step." To Kibby, the quote is a reminder that the world can feel overwhelming at times, but once you take that first step, youโ€™re farther along than you were the day before.

Whether sheโ€™s helping residents find their footing, supporting her coworkers, or spending time in the saddle, Kibby knows that every meaningful journey starts with one step (or one hoofbeat) at a time.

Today, we pause to remember the lives lost on September 11, 2001, and to honor the courage of the first responders, service members, volunteers, and everyday people who showed extraordinary strength.

25 years later, we continue to stand with the families, survivors, and communities whose lives were forever changed. From Alaska and across the nation, we remember with compassion, gratitude, and unity.

Labor Day celebrates workers and their contributions while also inviting reflection on how work affects mental health. Stress, long hours, job insecurity, and unhealthy workplaces can contribute to anxiety, burnout, and depression.

The holiday also reminds us of the importance of rest and work-life balance. Supportive workplaces, fair treatment, reasonable workloads, and access to mental health resources help workers feel valued and well.

Ultimately, Labor Day is a reminder that every worker deserves more than fair wages. They also deserve respect, safety, rest, and support. Prioritizing mental health helps create stronger workplaces and healthier communities.

Our community is grieving after the heartbreaking loss of two young people who died by su***de. During this difficult time, parents, caregivers, teachers, friends, and neighbors may wonder what to say or how to help.

Talking about su***de does not plant the idea. Calm, caring, and direct conversations can help young people feel less alone. Be honest and age-appropriate, listen without judgment, and make space for their feelings. It is okay to ask directly:

โ€ข โ€œHave you been thinking about su***de?โ€
โ€ข โ€œHave you felt like you donโ€™t want to be alive?โ€
โ€ข โ€œAre you worried about yourself or someone else?โ€

Ask calmly. Listen more than you speak. Avoid judgment, lectures, or trying to quickly fix the feeling. Let them know that emotional pain can change, help is available, and they do not have to carry it alone.

Watch for warning signs such as withdrawal, hopelessness, major mood changes, increased substance use, giving away belongings, or talking about death or being a burden. If you are concerned, stay with the young person, reduce access to anything they could use to hurt themselves, and connect them with immediate support.

If someone may be in immediate danger, call or text ๐Ÿ—๐Ÿ–๐Ÿ– for the Su***de & Crisis Lifeline, call ๐Ÿ—๐Ÿ๐Ÿ, or go to the nearest emergency department. The 988 Lifeline is available 24/7 for people in crisis and for family members, friends, or anyone who is worried about someone else.

In the days ahead, please keep checking in with the young people around you. Ask again. Sit with them. Encourage connection with trusted adults, school counselors, medical providers, faith or cultural supports, coaches, family, and mental health professionals.

Mount Juneau Counseling & Recovery and all of GHS grieves with our community. We also want every young person, parent, caregiver, and neighbor to know that support is available. If you or someone you know is struggling with mental health, substance use, grief, or thoughts of su***de, please reach out for help.
