How did National Disability Employment Awareness Month begin?

NDEAM has a history that goes back to 1945, when a national week was established to recognize the contributions of people with disabilities and encourage employment opportunities.

Over the decades, it evolved from a one-week observance into a month-long recognition of disability employment, inclusion, and opportunity.

Today, NDEAM is a reminder that people with disabilities bring valuable skills, talents, and perspectives to the workforce—and that everyone deserves the opportunity to pursue meaningful employment.

Swipe through to learn how NDEAM evolved and why its history still matters today.

Awareness has a history. Inclusion has a future..

🍽️ Access is about more than getting through the door. It's about belonging.

Join us in supporting on October 10 and celebrating inclusive communities where everyone can participate, connect, and thrive.

What does equal access to community life look like? Sometimes, it looks like dinner.

This October 10, Disability Night Out is inviting disabled people, families, friends, and allies to gather at restaurants across the country and celebrate our right to participate fully in community life.

Access is about more than getting through the door. It means being able to participate in the ordinary moments that connect us, like sharing a meal, spending time with friends and family, celebrating, and simply being part of our communities.

More than 36 years after the ADA, disabled people still encounter barriers in restaurants, cafés, and other community spaces. Disability Night Out offers a joyful way to make those barriers more visible while showing what inclusion can feel like.

This isn’t about catching businesses doing something wrong. It’s about disabled people bringing our lived expertise to the table, sharing what works and what could work better, and inviting restaurants to be part of creating more accessible and welcoming communities.

Experiences, feedback, and photos shared through Disability Night Out will help turn what we learn on October 10 into opportunities for greater access.

Because disabled people belong everywhere community happens.

What does a Job Coach really do?

It’s not about doing the job for someone. It’s about providing the guidance, encouragement, and support needed to build skills, grow confidence, and discover what’s possible.

The goal of a Job Coach isn’t to be needed forever. It’s to help someone realize, “I can do this on my own.”

That’s the heart of Supported Employment—helping people build meaningful careers while growing toward greater independence.

Support isn’t about doing it for someone. It’s about helping them realize they can do it themselves.

Disability is NOT a limitation. Lack of opportunity IS.

Disability does not mean inability. People with disabilities have dreams, goals, talents, and the potential to achieve meaningful things in their lives.

Too often, it’s not a person’s disability that stands in the way—it’s the barriers around them: limited access, discrimination, low expectations, and a lack of opportunity.

When we remove barriers and create inclusive spaces, people have the opportunity to learn, work, contribute, connect, and thrive.

The question isn’t what someone can’t do.
It’s whether we’re creating the opportunity for them to show what they can do.

Let’s challenge assumptions, remove barriers, and create a world where everyone has the opportunity to reach their potential.
