FIRE PREVENTION WEEK | DAY 4

For tools and rides, charge outside.

E-bikes, scooters, power tools, and other devices with larger lithium-ion batteries can store a lot of energy. If a battery fails while charging, it can produce intense heat, flames, and toxic smoke.

Whenever possible, charge these devices outside and away from doors, windows, and anything that can burn.

And never charge a damaged battery. If a battery is swollen, leaking, cracked, or unusually hot, stop using it.

Dodge County Emergency Management supports Fire Prevention Week. We're sharing fire safety information all week to help keep Dodge County safe, prepared, and informed.

FIRE PREVENTION WEEK | DAY 3

Fully charged? Time to unplug.

Rechargeable devices and their chargers can generate heat while charging. Leaving them plugged in longer than necessary can add unnecessary heat and stress to the battery.

When your device is fully charged, unplug it and put the charger away.

A few extra hours of charging isn't worth the risk.

Charge it. Unplug it. Stay safe.

FIRE PREVENTION WEEK | DAY 2

Soft surface? Hard pass.

Beds, couches, blankets, and other soft surfaces can trap heat around charging devices and increase the risk of fire.

Scrolling in bed? Sure.
Charging in bed? Not a great idea.

Instead, charge on a hard, flat surface where heat can dissipate.

FIRE PREVENTION WEEK | DAY 1

Cheap charger? Don't chance it.

Not all chargers and charging equipment are created equal. Damaged, counterfeit, or poorly made charging equipment can increase the risk of overheating, electric shock, or fire.

Use the charger that came with your device or one from a reputable manufacturer.

Safe charging is a superpower. Use it.

Dodge County Emergency Management is proud to support Fire Prevention Week by sharing fire safety and prevention information throughout the week. We work alongside our local fire departments and emergency response partners to help keep Dodge County residents safe, prepared, and informed.

Do you know your community's top risks?

Flooding? Severe weather? Winter storms? Power outages? Something else?

As National Preparedness Month comes to an end, take a few minutes to figure out what hazards are most likely to affect where you live.

Knowing your risks is the first step to knowing how to prepare.

What would you put at the top of the list?

09/29/2026

Stay safe every season by being weather aware. ⛈️❄️🌪️

Having a NOAA All-Hazards Radio provides real-time weather alerts for your area.

It also comes with battery backup, ensuring they work even during power outages.🔋

You don't have to spend a lot to be prepared.

Preparedness isn't about buying everything at once or having a perfect emergency kit.

Start with what you already have.

Do you have:
• Flashlights and extra batteries?
• Non-perishable food and water?
• A way to receive emergency alerts?
• Important documents somewhere you can access them?
• A plan for communicating with your family?

Pick one thing to improve this week. Small steps now can make a big difference when you need them.

National Preparedness Month is a great time to start.

09/17/2026

FEMA and the Federal Communications Commission will test the Emergency Alert System nationwide on Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2026, around 2:20 p.m. ET.

What to expect:
• Radio and TV programs will pause for about 1 minute to show the test message.
• You may hear the standard EAS tones.
• The message may be in English, Spanish, or both.
• Cell phones will not receive this test.
• No action is needed.

These tests help ensure emergency alerts work when they matter most.

Is your business ready for a disruption?

As part of National Preparedness Month, we're taking a look at preparedness beyond the home and into our local businesses.

A power outage. Severe weather. A cyber incident. Damage to your building. Employees who can't get to work. You may not be able to prevent every disruption, but you can plan for how your business will respond.

Join Dodge County Emergency Management tomorrow, September 16, at the Mayville Public Library for a presentation on Business Continuity and practical ways businesses can prepare for disruptions.

Prepared businesses help build prepared communities.

Your family isn't together when an emergency happens.
Now what?

The kids are at school. You're at work. Your spouse is somewhere else. Your normal route home isn't an option.

Would everyone know what to do?

Take a few minutes to talk through your emergency plan:
• How will you receive emergency information?
• Where will you meet if you can't go home?
• Who should your family contact?
• What happens if you can't reach each other?

You don't need a complicated plan. You just need a plan everyone understands.

Make the plan before you need it.
