Attention Alaskans! Please consider putting in your voice!!

Thank you to Alaska Children’s Trust for helping raise awareness about proposed federal changes to Head Start that could affect thousands of Alaska children and families.

In many Alaska communities, Head Start is the only child care program available. The proposed changes could affect staffing, health and dental supports, family engagement, and other services.

The public comment period is open through Tuesday, October 6 at 7:59 p.m. Alaska time. If Head Start has been part of your family’s story, consider sharing your perspective.

Thank you, Alaska Children’s Trust, for making sure Alaska families know about this opportunity to speak up. ❤️

Safer Seward Highway: Public Meeting

The Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities is hosting a special public meeting to share an update on the Safer Seward Highway project and the work that has gone into determining the project’s purpose and need, concepts considered, and next steps in the environmental process.

The meeting will be an opportunity to learn more about the ideas and analysis considered so far, hear about the proposed engineering design details, and provide feedback directly to the project team.

Tuesday, September 22
5:00–7:00 p.m.
Anchorage Loussac Library, Learning Commons
3600 Denali Street, Anchorage

There will be a presentation at 5:30 p.m., followed by a Q&A. Snacks will be provided.

Public input is an important part of the process, and I encourage anyone interested in the future of the Seward Highway to attend, learn more, and share their perspective.

Looking for a little bump on your hope meter? ❤️

Look no further than Bettye Davis East Anchorage High School, where more than 1,500 students gathered Friday for their first pep rally of the year — celebrating their school, their classmates, and their very needed brand-new gym floor.

I cannot tell you how much magic happens inside this public school building.

Thank you to Principal Brown for inviting legislators to experience this incredible celebration. We met the student body president, the homecoming court, an award-winning cadet, the cheer squad, the dance team — and so many of the remarkable young people who make East one of the most diverse schools in the nation.

These students will be our next healthcare providers, educators, firefighters, professional athletes, entrepreneurs, legislators and so much more.

And we know East sends superstars out into our state — because it has a long track record of doing exactly that.

I wish Facebook would let me post the entire hour-and-a-half celebration, because there was so much joy in that gymnasium. There were even a few happy tears.

I hope this little glimpse gives you a taste of the hope, energy and possibility I felt that day.

Our kids are worth celebrating. And they are one of the very best reasons to believe in Alaska’s future. There are football and basketball games, plays, academic competitions, dance performances in every high school near you. Call you local school for a schedule and catch your moment of joy!

I will continue to work on fully funding public education and policy for every student in our state to experience quality teaching and learning with a complete education curriculum. I know that means reasonable class sizes, liberal arts and career/technology pathways. Right now, with the current system, our teachers are saints for staying in their career and our children deserve better.

I rarely sign onto national letters. As a state legislator, I generally try to keep my focus on Alaska and the issues directly affecting our communities. But there are times when a federal policy could have such a direct impact on Alaska families that I believe it is important to speak up.

That is why I am signing onto a state legislators’ comment opposing proposed changes to the federal Head Start Program Performance Standards.

Head Start provides much more than early education. For many families, it is a connection to health and developmental services, mental health supports, nutrition, family resources, and early learning. The proposed changes would significantly reduce many of the current standards and could mean larger classroom groups, fewer staff and supports, fewer health and mental health services, and fewer services for children with disabilities. https://nwlc.org/press-release/trump-admins-new-head-start-rule-would-advance-its-long-term-goal-of-eliminating-program (https://nwlc.org/press-release/trump-admins-new-head-start-rule-would-advance-its-long-term-goal-of-eliminating-program/?utm_source=chatgpt.com)

With the proposed new federal regulatory framework, care providers could be asked to serve more children with fewer staff, larger classroom groups, fewer health and mental-health supports, and fewer services for children with disabilities.

I believe we should always ask a simple question when changing policies that affect young children: Will this make things better for children and families? If the answer is uncertain, we should take a careful look before moving forward.

Alaska’s children and families deserve policies that support their ability to learn, grow, and thrive. That is why I am adding my voice to this effort and asking federal leaders to reconsider these proposed changes.

Grateful for all the “off-the-grid”spontaneous connections that happen at neighborhood coffee shops! ☕️

This morning, I had a great conversation with re-entry and homelessness experts Cathleen and Emily, and they shared two nuggets that really stuck with me:

1️⃣ Address needs at Level 2—not Level 10.
People returning to our communities, including many coming home after serving time in prison, have a much better chance of success when we connect them with the right support early—before a crisis escalates. And, importantly, it can cost all of us less.

2️⃣ This is a statewide issue.
When these women ask people experiencing homelessness, “Why are you here?” they often hear: “I was sent here.” People from Kodiak, Juneau and other communities are being directed to Anchorage because they’ve been told that’s where the services are.

There’s a bigger conversation here about prevention, re-entry, resources and how communities across Alaska can work together—rather than continuing to push people toward Anchorage when they need help.

Sometimes the most important policy conversations start with a cup of coffee and a couple of people willing to share what they’re seeing on the ground. ❤️

We all know Alaska needs to diversify our economy and our revenue. But diversification doesn’t just happen in a spreadsheet. It happens when Alaskans turn GREAT IDEAS into businesses, create good jobs, solve problems, and build industries that can last.

That’s why I’m excited for Alaska Entrepreneurship Week, September 14–18! 🚀

This is the 13th-ish Alaska Entrepreneurship Week—a week packed with opportunities to learn, connect, pitch ideas, meet entrepreneurs, and support people who are dreaming up what’s next for Alaska.

I’ve seen great ideas come out of these weekends- everything from healthcare in ovations to successful shoe designs!

Maybe you have the next great Alaska startup idea. Or maybe you’re someone who wants to invest, mentor, encourage, or simply cheer on the innovators who are taking the leap.

Either way, come be part of it!

👉 Find events and get involved: akew.org

And please share this with the brilliant, creative, entrepreneurial Alaskans in your life. Our fiscal future may depend on more of us thinking BIG—and then doing something about it.

I’ll be there to learn about how state policy can better support new Alaskan businesses.

Let’s see what Alaska can build!

So much to say here! These funds, while one time, are very welcome and needed in an education system that has been looking for a lifeline. Even if it was one time funding, it is important. Alaskan parents not in ‘the know’ may be shocked to find out that much of these funds will not be spent this year. Here is why:

Sadly, the Dunleavy administration was unable to confirm these funds would be available (remember school started mid-August, and this news came out last night, and so leadership in Anchorage School District did not feel confident spending the approximately 40% of these funds that were intended to help students this year.
Given the price of oil, the legislature was quite certain the funds would be there. However, understandably, given all of the volatility of funding over the past eight years and without the Governor and the Department of Revenue willingness to give more certainty, quite a few of the 53 districts, including ASD chose to hold back funds this year.
Now, it is very difficult to hire the educators needed and many have moved. In Anchorage, class sizes and cut programs will deeply affect student learning. I hope there will be efforts in districts to do everything they possibly can to restore the many cuts they made.
Onward to leadership who will forward fund education so that our children can get the start they deserve. We have a LOT to do to ensure adequate, predictable funding so that every district, including the elected local leaders know in advance how to plan for every child to have a fantastic year of learning.

Heartbroken to hear about Dolly Parton’s passing. 💔

Dolly was one of the most ardent champions of young children and families in America. Through her music, generosity, and especially her Imagination Library, she helped put millions of books into the hands of children—giving little ones the joy of reading and the gift of dreaming big.

Her heart and soul went into everything she did. What a remarkable legacy of kindness, generosity, imagination, and love.

Thank you, Dolly. You will be deeply missed. I truly appreciate the legacy you’ve left. ❤️📚🎶

Buckle up. I know many of us have become numb to what would normally be shocking news—but this one stopped me in my tracks.

I was stunned to learn that “Secretary of War” Pete Hegseth fired the top three leaders of Stars and Stripes, the independent news organization serving our military community simply for reporting on the abhorrent conditions aboard the U.S.S. Abraham Lincoln.

I honestly never saw this coming. How on earth is this okay?

I’m grateful to House Co-Chair of the Joint Armed Services Committee, Representative Andrew Gray, for bringing this issue forward so Alaskans can understand what is happening and why it matters.

Our servicemen and women give their ALL to protect this country. They deserve to know that we are giving our ALL back home to protect them, too—including protecting their access to honest, independent reporting.

I sincerely hope our federal delegation is paying attention and is prepared to stand up and do the right thing when a President and/or his administration fails to uphold its duty to the American people and the men and women who serve our country.

Our troops deserve our courage, our vigilance, and our voices. 🇺🇸

Today, my thoughts are with every person grieving this devastating loss, and with all those who are working through the investigation and response.

May the families and friends of all eight victims feel the strength of Alaskans standing with them. ❤️

I know Security Aviation has an excellent reputation, and I am confident that the company, along with the NTSB and other authorities, will work diligently to understand what happened and do everything possible to prevent another tragedy.
