CHP celebrated the 90th birthday of retired CHP Officer Mervin "Merv" Humes, badge #4382, with a special fly-along aboard H-20 over the Sacramento area.

A former CHP helicopter pilot, Mervin dedicated his career to serving the people of California and helping shape CHP aviation. After flying helicopters early in his career, he played a key role in establishing the CHP helicopter and fixed-wing aircraft program in Sacramento. The CHP family was always a huge part of his life and remains an important part of his legacy today.

Commissioner Sean Duryee and Assistant Commissioner Robin Johnson joined his family in recognizing this special milestone and celebrating a lifetime of service, dedication, and contributions to the Department.

Happy 90th Birthday, Mervin! Thank you for paving the way for those who followed and for your lasting impact on the CHP family. 🎉🎂🚁

A secure load is everyone’s responsibility, not just today but every day. Taking a few extra minutes before you hit the road can help prevent crashes, injuries, and roadway hazards:

• Tie down all items with ropes, straps, or cargo nets rated for the load.
• Cover loose materials like dirt, gravel, or yard waste with a tarp.
• Place heavier items on the bottom and distribute weight evenly.
• Check that tailgates, doors, and trailer latches are fully closed and locked.
• Remove or tie down anything that could blow away, including lightweight items.
• Recheck your load after the first few miles and periodically during longer trips.

A hot car can turn deadly in minutes.

🌡️ Temperatures inside a vehicle can rise 20 degrees in just 10 minutes.
👶 On average, 37 children die each year from heatstroke in vehicles.
🚗 Even on a 60-degree day, a child can die in a hot car.

Look before you lock. Never leave a child or pet unattended in a vehicle, not even for a moment.

You made it to graduation. Congratulations!

Don’t let one bad decision ruin everything before your life even begins.

Zero tolerance means zero tolerance. Diploma or not, underage drinking and driving will change lives forever.

Sadly, this one was arrested for DUI nearly three times the legal limit. Open liquor bottles and trying to give a fake name obviously didn’t help the situation.

Make the smart choice and celebrate a Sober Graduation night.
