I have a night off from my duties at the Minnie Hackney Community Service Center of Joplin and yet here I am, wide awake, thinking about our guests and what comes next when we close on Monday.

Over the past week, our community has shown up in powerful ways. We’ve provided meals, warmth, clothing, beds, showers, and care to our most vulnerable neighbors. And while the big needs are often easy to see, sometimes the most important things are small--like a belt. A simple belt to hold up pants that fit in September but are way too big in January.

Tomorrow, I’ll be putting together a list of very specific needs: pants, belts, shoes, coats, sweatshirts, underwear, and socks. I’ll be sharing those needs soon, and if you’re able to help, please know that your kindness truly matters. Blessings to you and yours.

I’m not asking anyone to go buy new. I’m asking you to look at what you already have, or what you might find at a thrift or resale shop. Reuse and recycle--because dignity doesn’t require brand new, it requires care.

At Minnie Hackney, we made a commitment years ago to help our community feel cared for. Sometimes that care looks like a hot shower or clean laundry. Sometimes it looks like pants that actually fit--a 32” waist with a 36” inseam. And sometimes it’s simply looking someone in the eye and letting them know they matter enough for a community to show up for them.

On Monday, February 2nd, our warming center will close as this emergency weather response comes to an end. But my hope is that our guests leave not just warmer--but clothed in love.

Please watch for my specific requests on Saturday. Thank you, always, for your generosity. I am so proud of the kindness in this community.

The Minnie Hackney Community Service Center continues to operate as an overnight warming center, and we are requesting additional volunteers for overnight shifts.

Overnight volunteers play an important role in helping maintain a safe, calm, and welcoming environment for guests during these cold nights. Volunteers do not need to remain awake for the entire shift. You simply need to be present, attentive, and available if needs arise.

If you are able to help, even for one night, please consider signing up. When registering, select all shifts you are able to cover, as flexible availability helps us ensure consistent overnight coverage.

Thank You, Joplin ❤️

We want to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who has donated supplies, contributed financially, volunteered their time, and helped spread the word over the past several days. Because of your generosity, the Minnie Hackney Community Service Center has been able to provide a safe, warm, and welcoming place for our neighbors during this winter storm.

Your support has made a real difference. From warm meals and blankets to overnight supervision and quiet moments of kindness, every contribution matters more than you may ever know.

We also want to share that the warming center will remain open through Friday morning to continue supporting those who need shelter as temperatures remain dangerously cold.

Thank you for showing up for our community when it matters most. We are deeply grateful for each and every one of you.
