The City of Joplin is proud to share a new initiative from the Joplin Police Department—Operation Silver Shield.

This program is centered on something simple but important: making sure our seniors and residents with disabilities are seen, supported, and not overlooked.

Through routine wellness checks, JPD is helping build stronger connections and providing an added layer of care for those who may need it most.

It’s another example of how our community continues to look out for one another—today and into the future.

Introducing Operation Silver Shield

The Joplin Police Department is launching Operation Silver Shield, a new initiative focused on providing routine wellness checks for senior citizens and individuals with disabilities.

✅ Available to:
• Residents age 55 and older
• Individuals with a verified disability

Wellness checks will be conducted by members of the JPD Sentinel Unit and Co‑Responder Unit, with a focus on supporting at‑risk residents who may benefit from regular check‑ins.

• during business hours Monday through Friday from 8 am to 5 pm
• beginning Monday June 8

Silver Sage Renaissance Fair continues this weekend at Landreth Park. The event will have Murphy Blvd closed between Landreth Avenue and Pool Street from 10 am to 6 pm Saturday and Sunday (June 6-7).

🏢 Building Relationships, One Permit at a Time

Kim is the friendly face customers see when they arrive at the counter to obtain a building permit. With years of experience issuing permits, he has built strong, positive relationships with local contractors—so much so that many specifically ask to work with him.

Kim consistently represents the City with professionalism and a welcoming attitude. His dedication to the Building Division is evident in his strong work ethic, often arriving early or staying late to ensure the job is done right.

In this month's Community Update, Mayor Rob O'Brian explains why the City Council will soon be spending a day at a "retreat". For Joplin, as in many other cities and even private businesses, it’s a best practice for the board, or in this case - the council - to occasionally take a step back from the usual City business. Many cities refer to this as a leadership retreat, or a vision or strategy session. The real purpose is for the elected officials serving as volunteers on your City Council to spend a day building team cohesion while thinking about the needs of the residents.
