While in DC I noticed a Congressman had the exterior of his office honoring fallen officers. Absolutely gut wrenching to see some of them, one was a husband and wife. I kept looking until I found Joplin Police Department officers Cpl Ben Cooper and Officer Jake Reed. Glad to see they are honored for their sacrifice. Thank you Congressman Troy Nehls.

If you value the public safety of our community, I would encourage you to vote yes on the continuation of Prop B to help increase pay for our Police, Fire, and Dispatch. Retaining our force and investing in them is valuable to our community.

Big thanks to our team of supporters who showed up to knock doors this morning! We fed them a hearty breakfast to get them fueled and ready. 🥞☕

Now they're out there spreading the word about Proposition Police & Fire in Joplin. It's a no-tax-increase measure that replaces the existing half-cent sales tax to provide permanent, stable funding for our Police and Fire Departments. It supports staffing, pay and benefits, equipment, facilities, and keeps our first responders strong without raising taxes.
Vote YES on April 7th! Your vote helps ensure public safety in Southwest Missouri for years to come.

Let's stand together for those who protect us every day. 💙❤️

I'm glad to see this program reopen to add more opportunity for our residents. If you know someone looking to buy a home, encourage them to apply!

The City of Joplin is pleased to announce that the highly popular JHAP (Joplin Homebuyer Assistance Program) is now opening a third round.

Having an opinion is fine, but this level of disagreement is uncivil and deranged. I get a few messages that are this unhinged so let me share. Meet Jordan Mann who apparently thinks telling me I should die and want to mock me for my weight is the way to effectively make change in our community.
Gosh Mr Mann, what happened to supporting body positivity? See this nonsense doesn't bother me because I regularly engage with citizens who will approach me with a problem in our community or in their neighborhood and then talk with our city manager and other council members about fixing the problems. Mr Mann seems to have deeper issues than I can help resolve, I pray he finds some peace because this is not healthy.
Why am I sharing this? I would say it's important people know who some of their neighbors are. The rhetoric in this country needs to tone down even on the local level. I would urge those who encounter people like this to use caution.

Following Monday night's council meeting a few concerned members in our community reached out to me concerned some advocates would be pushing for a tent city for the homeless in Joplin. I have firmly stood for policies to make Joplin more safe and undoubtedly a tent city would have the opposite effect. While some advocates may be well intentioned, those actions could be detrimental to our city if we took the suggested policies one speaker promoted.

The City would actually lose grant funding if it were to take the approach suggested Monday, thus making the homelessness crisis worse. See the Executive Order issued July 24:

Ending Crime and Disorder on America's Streets – The White House

Sec. 5. Increasing Accountability and Safety in America’s Homelessness Programs. (a) The Secretary of Health and Human Services and the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development shall take appropriate actions to increase accountability in their provision of, and grants awarded for, homelessness assistance and transitional living programs. These actions shall include, to the extent permitted by law, ending support for “housing first” policies that deprioritize accountability and fail to promote treatment, recovery, and self-sufficiency.

Very busy day on Capitol Hill. But on the way to a meeting I walked by the office of Congresswoman Nancy Mace and was able to sign her book and tell her staffer how much I respect Ms Nancy Mace.

So a little discussion came up this week regarding some ordinances the Joplin City Council adopted recently and went into effect. Yes, I was someone who advocated for these and other steps because I see them as necessary steps to make our community safe and to do more to clean up the appearance of our city.

First ordinance was to prohibit stolen shopping carts from being strung around town, creating blight and obstructing our sidewalks and parks.

The second one was to be consistent with a US Supreme Court ruling that prohibits camping in our public parks.

Both of these have created a little stir with certain advocates and some enablers in our community. Simply put stealing is wrong, it's illegal no matter who you are. Camping in parks is unsanitary and dangerous, and becomes a deterrent from our citizens enjoying the recreation our parks provide to families. When I ran for Council, I sought to do more to clean up our community and stop vagrancy from running rampant. As I have stated in council meetings we had many people address these issues with us and as a council we need to address these problems. There is a stark difference in the homeless population who are working towards recovery and are taking the assistance from local agencies that build a path to recovery, and the vargrants that break into empty structures often starting fires and stealing in our community.

I'm not going to sit and argue with keyboard warriors who often don't live in our community. Our meetings are public and open for residents to openly address council, we even hold forums like city council in the park to get into the community and engage residents. If you disagree with the steps we are taking, I would ask you to come to a meeting and present new lawful solutions.
