As I was flying home from the Big Brothers Big Sisters of America National Conference this morning, the flight attendant began the familiar safety briefing.
"You need to put on your own oxygen mask before helping others."
I've heard those words dozens of times. But this time, they landed differently.
Over the past few days, I had the opportunity to learn from some of the best minds in the Big Brothers Big Sisters movement. I attended workshops, explored new ideas, discovered innovative programs, and connected with leaders from across the country who are all working toward the same goal: helping young people reach their full potential.
And as I sat there listening to the safety instructions, I realized that's exactly what National Conference is for.
The work we do is deeply meaningful, but it can also be demanding. If we want to effectively serve children, support families, empower mentors, and strengthen our communities, we have to continue learning and growing ourselves.
National Conference is our oxygen mask.
It gives us fresh ideas. New skills. Renewed energy. A broader perspective. It reminds us that we're not alone in this work and that there are always better ways to create life-changing relationships for the young people we serve.
I'm excited to bring these new tools, programs, and ideas back to Jasper and Newton Counties. The future is bright, and I can't wait to put what I've learned into action.
Because when we invest in ourselves, we're ultimately investing in the children who are counting on us.
Now it's time to get to work.
