y in the last century to the enactment of SAFER in 2003. With extremely active political and legislative programs, and with recognized experts in the fields of occupational health and safety, fire-based emergency medical services and hazardous materials training, the IAFF has established professional standards for the North American fire service. The IAFF provides a strong voice in the development and implementation of new training and equipment, and has worked hard to ensure the proper staffing of fire and EMS departments. The IAFF is a member driven organization—for fire fighters, by fire fighters.

Looks like our first severe weather event of the year may happen Monday afternoon/evening. As a reminder, be weather aware. This means begin paying attention to TRUSTED weather resources for updates on timing and track of the weather. This includes the US National Weather Service Springfield Missouri and our local media meteorologists. Second, have a plan in the event severe weather approaches. Finally, as we get closer to the potential event, make sure your weather radio is programmed and operating correctly or make sure notifications for weather apps on your phone are on.

If a small grease or cooking fire starts during your preparations, smother the flames by sliding a lid over the pan and turning off the burner. Leave the pan covered until it is completely cooled. For more cooking tips, visit: http://nfpa.social/oxRA50R1sJC

Former Joplin firefighter still saving lives! Great job, Larin.

They say that luck is when opportunity meets preparation. That's exactly what happened when Larin, a Spire service technician based in Monett, Missouri and former firefighter, was leaving a meter change job. He noticed a fire burning next to a nearby house, and was quickly spreading to the home.

"My instincts and training just kicked in." Larin said. "I was just lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time because we were changing meters in the neighborhood. In fact, I had just changed the meter at that home a few days before. I'm glad I was there and could help."

Thanks to Larin's quick thinking, he was able to get the homeowner to safety and minimize the fire until 911 could arrive. 🧡

Today we honor and remember the ultimate sacrifice made by Officer Jake Alexander Reed of the Joplin Police Department on March 9th, 2022. Police Officer Jake Reed and Corporal Ben Cooper were shot and killed after responding to a disturbance call at a shopping center in the 400 block of Geneva Avenue at about 1:20 pm. While he and another officer attempted to take a subject into custody the man opened fire on them, critically wounding both. The man then stole one of the officers' services weapons and a patrol car. He continued firing at pursuing officers until crashing near the intersection of E 9th Street and Connecticut Avenue. The man then took cover behind a van and opened fire on a third officer who was still inside of his cruiser, severely wounding him. The man continued shooting at other responding officers until being fatally wounded by return fire. Corporal Cooper and Officer Reed were transported to a local hospital where Corporal Cooper was pronounced dead a short time later. Officer Reed remained in grave condition for several days until it was determined that he could not recover. He remained on life support until his organs could be donated on March 11th, 2022. Officer Reed had served with the Joplin Police Department for five years. He is survived by his wife and infant son.
