The Nolichucky Restoration Project is hosting another amazing volunteer opportunity on Saturday, November 8th! The 115 mile Nolichucky River is a keystone member of our community; home to the endangered Chunky Madtom fish and endangered Appalachian elktoe freshwater mussel. This opportunity to join forces and clean up the river is a great way to give back.

The Nolichucky Restoration team will be providing trash bags and gloves but ask that volunteers provide their own: water bottle, razor knife (if you have one), and a friend!

From the words of the Nolichucky Restoration Project, "Together, we can make a big difference for our river and community."

Location: 1835 Earnest Road, Chuckey, TN 37641

Time: 10:00 am - 2:00 pm

Putting in the work!! We are so excited to announce the new pollinator garden located on Spring St! What was once a two-way street with a whole lot of potential is now a one-way with a whole median full of biodiversity. Keep Jonesborough Beautiful is proud to have sponsored part of this project, partnering with the Parks and Recreation Department as well as the Solid Waste Department to get it all done. In this new garden, you will find Tennessee Coneflower, Bee Balm, St. John's Wort and many other native perennial species! This truly is a blooming time in Tennessee's Oldest Town!

Yes! It rained, so I don't need to water today! Right? WRONG. Would you feel satisfied after only a few millimeters of water to drink? Plants typically need far more water than they get from a rain shower, especially in the summer months when temperatures soar and humidity is high. Especially plants in containers such as raised garden beds, flowers in pots, and container grown vegetables. Without the surrounding soil to keep them moist, container plants dry out much more quickly than those in ground. So what is the best solution? Maintain a watering schedule! Using a hose with a timer and sprinkler system is effective and hands off. Handwatering the old-fashioned way is always successful as well!

So, while we are in the midst of summer showers, remember that you have a crucial part to play in the success of your plants. Water those babies!

Pollinator Week 2025!! What an awesome time to celebrate our native pollinators in all their glory. This chart from Nature Kenya gives us a look into pollinators from other parts of the world as well as some of our own. The whole wild planet is dependent upon pollinators, including us. Without them, we wouldn't have the foods on our table that we rely on daily. To encourage pollination, plant a pollinator garden in your yard! It can be tiny or huge, whatever you can manage!

Some of the best native perennials to plant are:

Bee Balm
Tennessee Coneflower
Joe Pye W**d
Purple Ironweed
Milkweed
Yarrow
Columbine

And so many more! There is an abundance of native plant nurseries here in East Tennessee and in neighboring states to shop at. Including Shy Valley Farms in Fall Branch, Carolina Native Nursery in Burnsville NC, and Evergreen of Johnson City!

The Tennessee Coneflower is in full bloom at this time of year! A beloved spot by all of our local pollinators, the TN Coneflower is a symbol of Tennessee's spirit in overcoming every obstacle to continue on. Once on the brink of extinction, this plant has made its way back through efforts by native plant lovers and flower endurance. Consider planting this native flower in your yard to support local pollinators and show your volunteer spirit! Take one of these posts to make your new wallpaper for a new conversation starter!
