When this essay ran on Police1, the response from officers and retirees was immediate.

The author lays out a tough reality: the job doesn’t pause when you retire — it keeps moving. For many officers, the silence that follows can be the hardest part.

Deputy Gabriel Ramirez and Deputy Michael Hislope were shot and killed in Christian County, Missouri, after a traffic stop led to a manhunt and shootout that also left two other deputies injured.

Deputy Ramirez, 30, joined the Christian County Sheriff's Office in March 2025. Deputy Hislope, 40, started serving the community in 2019: https://trib.al/G8qS2UN

Such a great program

Such a great program

Crisis Intervention calls have become a large part of our daily call volume. These calls are often difficult and time-consuming. Valuable yearly training by our officers and responders equips them to handle these types of calls and to provide the necessary resources to those in need.

The goal of the Crisis Response Unit is to alleviate repeat CIT calls and reduce volatility by using specially trained officers and a therapist co-responder. This program has been in place for two years, and the numbers speak volumes about its success.
