📚 Before the story begins, the learning begins! Mrs. Simino’s students are building background knowledge through a picture walk as they prepare to dive into Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart. Published in 1958, Achebe’s landmark novel explores Igbo culture in Nigeria and the profound changes brought by British colonialism. It has become one of the most widely read works of African literature and a cornerstone of literature classrooms around the world.

By observing, discussing, making connections and asking questions before they even turn the first page, these students are building the context they need to engage more deeply with the story. What a great example of thoughtful, intentional learning happening in a JPS classroom! 🌍📖🖤💛

📰 Do you have an old Jonesboro High School newspaper tucked away somewhere? We’d love to see it!

JPS is working to collect and preserve issues of The Golden Times and other JHS newspapers from every era. From student life and sports to school productions, clubs, accomplishments and all those little moments that tell the story of being a Hurricane, these newspapers are a unique piece of our school’s history. And sometimes, they hold some pretty amazing surprises! 👀

Take this October 24, 1986 issue, for example. The story about JHS’s production of Frankenstein features student actor Donnie Keshawarz, who played Victor Frankenstein. Donnie went on to have a successful career as an actor, appearing in Wolf of Wall Street, Matt Damon's The Adjustment Bureau and Brad Pitt's Ad Astra, alongside recurring TV guest spots on acclaimed shows like The Sopranos, Homeland, and True Detective. How fun to find a glimpse of his early days on the JHS stage right here in our archives!

So, what might be hiding in your attic, closet, scrapbook or basement? Whether you have a stack of newspapers from the 1950s, a few issues from the 1970s or something much more recent, we'd love to add them to our collection.

📚 Help us preserve the stories, people and memories that make Jonesboro High School special. If you have old JHS newspapers you'd be willing to share or donate, please send us a message.

You never know what piece of Hurricane history might be hiding in your home! 🖤💛 Once a Hurricane, always a Hurricane! 🌪️
