God’s Tools
Dispatch (Assignment): Read Jeremiah 51:1-53, Titus 2:1-15, Psalm 99:1-9, and Proverbs 26:17.

Briefing: I love Proverbs 27:17, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” When I think about this verse, I realize that we sharpen tools and tools are meant to be used, put to work. Tools must be maintained, or they are of no use. That is why we sharpen them.

On the Street: (Jeremiah 51:20) God uses people to do His will. In this verse, He is talking about using a foreign army to conquer Babylon. He says, “You are my war club, my weapon for battle—with you I shatter nations, with you I destroy kingdoms,”. God will use this foreign nation as a tool in His hand.
Sometimes He uses good people to do good things and sometimes He uses bad people to do bad things. Jesus was a carpenter and was familiar with using tools to get the job done. Law enforcement uses tools also. We wear a tool belt that has run out of space to put anything else on it. We are familiar with tools but are we aware that we are also a tool? God uses us to keep the peace and maintain justice and righteousness. We do not give peace, justice, or righteousness, those are God’s to give, but He has called us to maintain them.

Let’s pray that God will continue to use us, and other law enforcement officers, as a good tool to do good things.

Investigational Resources: Proverbs 27:17.
Officer Safety Principle: To be used by God, we must submit to His authority and be ready to do whatever He asks of us. Some people call it “putting your yes on the table”. Saying yes to God before even hearing the assignment.

Godly Character
Dispatch (Assignment): Read Jeremiah 49:23 – 50:46, Titus 1:1-16, Psalm 97:1 – 98:9, and Proverbs 26:13-16.
Briefing: I once applied for a job that required its officers to be cross trained as police officers and firefighters. I was already a police officer but needed to get in better shape to pass the firefighter portion of the test. If I wanted the job, I had to meet the requirements.
On the Street: (Titus 1:7-9) Paul is giving us a list of character traits that a mature Christian should possess or be actively working toward. This is a list of behaviors we should pray and ask God to help us with and to bless us with. This is the character of the person we need to be.
Blameless
Not overbearing
Not quick tempered
Does not get drunk
Is not violent
Is not dishonest
Faithful to his wife
If he has children, they must be believers, behave, and have good character.
Think of someone who is the manager at a bank. He/She must be smart, well educated, good with numbers, honest, and good with people. There are requirements and qualifications that are important to have for a person to be able to do the job. It is no different in law enforcement. We have educational and physical requirements. A person must pass a test and a background check. Their credit history and criminal history must be clean and that is not all. It is no different in the church. To be a leader in the church, a person must possess certain qualities.
A lot of this depends on a person’s spiritual discipline. A Christian who does not currently possess these qualities but desires to have them will need to begin by praying. They should ask God to change their heart toward the kind of character that pleases Him and reflects the life of a Christ follower.
People do not climb Mount Fuji in a day. It is a long, slow climb that takes training, dedication, and discipline. This is corny but true; the quicker we get started, the quicker we can reach the summit.
Investigational Resources: Matthew 7:16-20.
Officer Safety Principle: There is great responsibility that comes with leadership. God has tools for leaders who want to lead for the right reasons. Pray that God will lead you in the way you should go and the way you should lead.
