Today, as we gathered in Joliet City Square to mark 25 years since September 11, 2001, I found myself reflecting on just how much that day changed all of us.
Most of us can still remember exactly where we were when we heard the news. We remember the shock, the sadness and the uncertainty but we also remember how Americans came together. We looked out for our neighbors, supported one another and witnessed incredible acts of courage and selflessness.
Standing together today as Mayor of the City of Joliet was a powerful reminder that 25 years may have passed, but our responsibility to remember has not.
We honor the nearly 3,000 lives that were taken too soon, the families who continue to carry their memory, and the first responders who ran toward danger without hesitation.
To our own Joliet police officers, firefighters, paramedics and first responders: thank you. Your willingness to answer the call every day represents the same spirit of service and sacrifice we honor today.
May we continue to teach future generations about September 11 not only about the tragedy of that day, but about the courage, unity and strength that followed.
Twenty-five years later, we remember. We honor. And we will never forget. 🇺🇸
