I lichen you very moss!

๐Ÿ’š Lichen or Moss? The species pictured above is commonly called wolf lichen (letharia vulpina). Lichens are a complex life form. It's a symbiotic partnership of two separate organisms, a fungus and an alga.

๐ŸŸขThe Latin name 'vulpine' means fox like. However, this lichen is toxic to mammals and has been used historically as a poison for wolves and foxes. In earlier times ranchers would stuff animal carcasses with wolf lichen in hopes that canines (that may otherwise predate their cattle or sheep) would dine on the poisonous carrion trap instead. This may be how the wolf lichen received it's scientific name.

๐Ÿ’š Letharia vulpinaโ€™s color is not from bright chlorophyll, but rather a bitter, poisonous ingredient: vulpinic acid. Today, lab studies show that a light dusting of it on garden plants, in quantities much less than those existing in the lichen itself, will significantly reduce predation from slugs and snails.

๐ŸŸข Due to it's eye-catching, almost florescent color, wolf lichen has been used traditionally by many Native American groups as a pigment source for dyes and paints.

๐Ÿ’š Another way lichens directly benefit humans is through their ability to absorb everything in their atmosphere, especially pollutants. Lichens can provide us with valuable information about the environment around us. Any heavy metals or carbon or sulfur or other pollutants in the atmosphere are absorbed into the lichen thallus. Scientists can extract these toxins and determine the levels that are present in our atmosphere. This information can help us make adjustments for cleaner air.

๐ŸŸข Because lichens enable algae to live all over the world in many different climates, they also provide a means to convert carbon dioxide in the atmosphere through photosynthesis into oxygen, which we all need!

I'm lichen that a lot !

The Bushman Mill at Plumas-Eureka State Park. More diminutive stamp mills such as this one were used at small-scale mining operations throughout the sierras. This five stamp meal crushes quartz or into fine sand to extract gold.

Song for Autumn

In the deep fall
donโ€™t you imagine the leaves think how comfortable it will be to touch the earth instead of the nothingness of air and the endless freshness of wind?

And donโ€™t you think the trees themselves, especially those with mossy, warm caves, begin to think of the birds that will come โ€“ six, a dozen โ€“ to sleep inside their bodies?

And donโ€™t you hear
the goldenrod whispering goodbye, the everlasting being crowned with the first tuffets of snow? The pond vanishes, and the white field over which the fox runs so quickly brings out its blue shadows. And the wind pumps its bellows. And at evening especially, the piled firewood shifts a little, longing to be on its way.

๐ŸEveryday is Indigenous People's Day! Today especially let us take a moment to honor and recognize that Plumas-Eureka State Park sits on the traditional territory of the Mountain Maidu People.

๐ŸToday the Maidu continue to live and thrive in Plumas County and beyond. California State Parks includes Maidu stories in our interpretation and education here at Plumas-Eureka State Park. However only the Maidu themselves are experts on their own stories, current narratives and their history.

๐ŸWe understand we are on Maidu Land and that tribal families are still recovering from the attempted genocide of their people during the California Gold Rush. Despite these traumas, Maidu culture and people persist and thrive to this day. The Sierra District recognizes that Maidu people are the original, most experienced caretakers of this place and supports tribal sovereignty.
