Our 13 Investigates report on Kratom is tonight on Channel 13.
Kratom is an herb from Southeast Asia that has been used around the world for centuries. People say it works wonders.
You might not have noticed it, but it's widely available in gas stations, convenience stores, and v**e shops.
It's gotten the nickname "Gas Station He**in."
Experts say Kratom and a related concentrated product 7-OH can be highly addictive, similiar to opioids.
People who became addicted say it's an expensive and dangerous habit, and that the withdrawal is terrible. They also said people may think it's safe because it's labeled a natural supplement.
The governor's office says Kratom has been linked to more than 100 overdose cases in one year in New York State.
It's banned in some states, including Vermont, and is not approved by the FDA.

HEADS UP PARENTS:
There is a Social Media Challenge that is back and rearing its ugly head. Its called the, "Benedryl Challenge."

Taking part in social media challenges is often driven by teens’ need for validation and acceptance. With social media, these come quickly in the form of “likes.” Therefore, teen interest in social media challenges can correspond with emotions of sadness, boredom and anger. Impulsiveness and fun with friends are other reasons they may take part in challenges.
