It was an honor to welcome Olivia Hay to the Capitol on Monday. Olivia, a senior at Somerset Area Senior High School, is the lieutenant governor of the State YMCA of Pennsylvania Youth and Government program – the only student-run, student-led model government experience of its kind in the Commonwealth. She visited Harrisburg to showcase why this initiative benefits students like her. It was great to meet you, Olivia, and thank you for taking an interest in our civic process!

Today is a difficult day in Pennsylvania after State Police Cpl. Tim O’Connor was shot and killed last evening in Chester County while conducting a traffic stop. Every day, our law enforcement officers risk their lives to protect our communities through bravery and great personal sacrifice. His death is a harrowing reminder of the dangers our first responders face daily. My heart goes out to Cpl. O’Connor’s family, friends and police family during this difficult time.

Maple production is deeply ingrained in the heritage of Somerset County. Today the reigning Maple Queen, along with all of this year‘s Maple Princesses performed the ceremonial tree tapping marking the official start of the season. Best of luck to these young ladies at the Queen competition, and most of all, best of luck to all of our maple producers in the hopes that the weather holds for a long and successful season.

To boost public safety, I am happy to share that more than $39,200 combined in grant funding will be distributed to five local volunteer fire companies to strengthen wildfire prevention. The money may be used for purchasing critical wildfire suppression equipment, protective gear, communications tools and training.

The allocations are as follows:
• Jennerstown Volunteer Fire Department: $15,000
• Central City Fire Department: $7,500
• Hooversville Volunteer Fire Department: $7,500
• New Baltimore and Area Volunteer Fire Company: $7,500
• Acosta Volunteer Fire Department: $1,708

These brave men and women are so vital to our communities, and this funding will ensure they are able to do their jobs safely and effectively.

Today, the community joined me in recognizing Kongsberg Defence and Aerospace for expanding its business operations across the region. Serving as a pillar in our community for more than 20 years, this company employs Somerset County residents and delivers more than 20,000 Remote Weapons Stations and over 100 remote turrets to support U.S. national defense and military operations. It also partners with several Somerset County businesses, including Leiss Tool and Die and Augustine Die & Mold, Inc., to increase manufacturing. Congratulations, Kongsberg, on reaching this milestone achievement! I am pictured with Congressman John Joyce and fellow state House colleague, PA State Rep. Jim Rigby.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced the bridge located on Walker Road in Rockwood is closed due to a large hole in the deck of the bridge, which is requiring immediate repairs. It is estimated the bridge will be closed for 2-3 weeks. The proposed detour is approximately 6.1 miles from one side of the bridge to the other. If you are able, please avoid traveling on this road.
