Hello 8th Ward Neighbors! The community garden did pretty well this year. We had some issues with watering it, but we found a solution. Thanks Tom, Corey and our new water person, Austin who will water in the evenings. Also, our friendly neighborhood water person Tom also volunteered to cut the grass when he cuts his. Love this guy!!! What we didn't find is a solution for the vandalism. Someone took all the peppers and just threw them around and outside the garden, so sad. Someone also picked all the watermelon and cantaloupe before they could ripen. They couldn't have tasted good. Other than that, things are still growing, some taking their slow sweet time (like the tomatoes), but we have patience. If you would like some french green beans and peas, we have them in abundance, just stop by and pull you a few or more. I heard the french green beans are great simply sauteed in butter and garlic. The Brussels sprouts, cauliflower and broccoli are also taking their slow sweet time, but if they are like last year again it's worth the wait. They're located in the middle row and in the first bed on the playground side. There is also some elephant kale, watermelon radish and chinese mustard greens (they're in the bed closest to the street on the side of our neighbors house). The chinese mustard greens were planted by accident, and we didn't know what they were until recently. Anyways, they bolted, so I'm not sure how they'll taste. You'll also find basil and sage growing in and out of the beds, so help yourself. The green peppers were looking good, but again were vandalized. There's more coming because they still have lots of flowers. The zucchini was the star this year and we yielded a lot just from two plants. There are more growing that we planted later in the row farthest from the street close to the playground and there's also some french green beans and carrots in that bed. The green beans are ready, but the carrots and zucchini are not. Well, that's all folks, I'll keep you updated as to when the other veggies are ripe and ready. By the way, if you're not busy this Saturday, stop by our Golf Ball Drop fundraiser. I attached the flyer.
