Sergeant Wyman S. White of the 2nd US Sharpshooters recounts his experience of Pickett's Charge from his position on Cemetery Ridge: "We had not been in position many minutes when a yell from the Rebels informed us that the time had come...They came bounding along, yelling like demons. The distance from our line to the point where they came over the hill was, I should judge, about half a mile...further to the right they pushed up until it was a hand to hand fight." After the charge, White acknowledged the heavy losses of the Confederate army. "I dare say that not half of the men that came over the Emmitsburg Pike ever got back to recross it."
