Tomorrow when the farm boys find this
freak of nature, they will wrap his body
in newspaper and carry him to the museum.

But tonight he is alive and in the north
field with his mother. It is a perfect
summer evening: the moon rising over
the orchard, the wind in the grass. And
as he stares into the sky, there are
twice as many stars as usual.

Did you know that the property Little Free Library #35520 sits on is a certified wildlife habitat and a monarch waystation?! There are so many amazing plants and animals right outside my front door! Next week I will be starting a nature pic of the week series to share fun facts about all the wildlife I observe every day around the library🦋🐝🌼

When despair for the world grows in me
and I wake in the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children’s lives may be,
I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things
who do not tax their lives with forethought
of grief. I come into the presence of still water.
And I feel above me the day-blind stars
waiting with their light. For a time
I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.

Today, we bid farewell to Wendell Berry, one of the great literary voices of our time: poet, novelist, essayist, farmer and devoted guardian of the natural world. His words reminded us to live more gently, to honour the earth beneath our feet and to find grace in every corner of the earth. 🌿🌸🌛

A beautiful final thought from a man whose life and work were rooted in the enduring bonds between humanity, community and the living world. May he now rest within the peace he described so beautifully.
