Crews began smoke testing of sanitary sewer lines in the collection system on Sept. 15 as part of the Water and Sewer Services Department’s comprehensive maintenance program. Smoke testing helps the City determine possible points where extra water can enter the system during rain events. Testing is expected to continue through the end of the year.

Testing will be in the areas of:
• West Walnut Street
• North Roan Street
• Huffine Road
• Christian Church Road
• Kingsport Highway
• Airport Road
• Antioch Road
• Boones Creek Road
• Bobby Hicks Highway
• Old Gray Station Road

During the test, City crews will send white smoke designed for this type of testing into the sanitary sewer system at a manhole. It is then forced out through lines and cracks, openings, or plumbing vents on or near roof tops. The smoke is safe, odorless, non-toxic and non-staining.

This testing can also provide a service to homeowners. Smoke should not enter the home if the plumbing is correctly installed and well vented with working water traps. If smoke enters your home there may be deficiencies in your plumbing system. Please call 423.461.1645 for more information.
