Help us to track any further cases of the New World Screwworm. There has already been a confirmed case in Gillespie County to the west of us. TPWD is working with several other state and federal agencies to stop the spread. Here's how you can help!

When you are trying to hide from a creature 100 times your size but there are snacks right in front of you...
Eastern Cottontail Rabbits are camouflaged to hide from predators but sometimes they stand out by being too cute! During some maintenance we looked over and this little bun was standing perfectly still to avoid attention... until it couldn't resist munching on some snacks.
These rabbits are pretty common in the park so please follow posted speed limits to avoid collisions with wildlife. You'll also have a better chance of seeing wildlife while you drive!

This Wildlife Wednesday we want to showcase something most people see when they visit the park. The tail wagging "Greater Earless Lizard"!
If you hike down to the river or the falls you are bound to see these colorful lizards sunbathing and scurrying about. They enjoy living around sandy and rocky areas where they are camouflaged to blend in.

They will wait patiently as you hike closer, hoping that you can't see them. When you get too close they will dash away, almost from underfoot. That's when you'll see them wagging their black and white tail at you!
This wagging puts their detachable tail in-between the lizards body and a predator. If a bird or other animal tries to sn**ch it up, they grab the tail first and it falls off, letting the lizard run away!

While you are visiting please do not chase them, but enjoy watching them go about their day, eat some insects, and do lizard things! Have you seen this lizard before?

We received a little over an inch of rain upriver from us last night but the river is mostly unchanged at this time. More rain is expected this week so there will be a chance that the river rises at some point.
We hope to get our phone line back soon!

The river has come down quite a lot since the last post. The hydromet shows a flow around 50-60cfs.
At this time all trails are open to hiking and biking. The swimming area and Trammell Crossing are both open.
There is more rain in the forecast this week, so be sure to watch the weather before you come out to the park.
Bug repellant is recommended right now as wet conditions have led to more mosquitos than normal. There are also chiggers in the grass and we recommend staying on the trail to avoid getting bit.
Be safe and enjoy your time outdoors this week!

*Update 06/02/2026 - This post is out of date. The river has come down after this rise and is back to lower levels.

*Update 3:00pm 05/27/2026 - The power line has been repaired and the affected area is open again. All trails are open except for Trammell Crossing/Cypress Mill Trail.

*Update 10:00am 05/27/2026 - There is currently a downed power line in the lower section of the falls area (by Cypress Pool). Cones have been laid out to block off the area and workers are on site to make the area safe. Please do not enter this area until further notice.

As usual, when the hill country receives enough rain in the right conditions, the Pedernales River will flood. This could last a day or more if we get more rain. During this time we do not recommend entering or crossing the river. Cypress Mill Trail and Trammell Crossing are closed at this time.

This flood is flowing at about 3,000-4,000 cubic feet of water per second which is quite a bit faster than our 3-25cfs we had during the drought the last few years. The trail to the falls overlook is still open if you want to come see and hear this in person.

Be careful driving around the hill country today as some roads may have water flowing over them. All roads inside Pedernales Falls State Park are currently passable and no facilities are affected.

Day passes are sold out today Monday May 25th until 1pm. Only those of you that made advance reservations may enter until then. If you reserve your day pass ahead of time you are guaranteed entrance at the time you select! Then you're good the entire day even on busy holidays like today. We may sell all passes for the 1pm timeslot, so be sure to reserve your pass before you come out today! Yall have a Happy Memorial Day!

Due to expected rain and clouds our stargazing event tomorrow (Saturday 05/23) is cancelled. All other programs are still on, but may have to cancel if there is heavy rain or lightning. If it is just light rain we'll trek on!
9:30am - Guided Geology Hike to the Falls! Meet at the Falls Parking lot to join.
3:00pm - Hunters and Gatherers! Meet at the Picnic Area to join a prehistoric hunt!

We are still under a Flood Watch this weekend, be sure to watch the weather before any outdoor activities you have planned!
