Originally known as "Decoration Day", it has now evolved into a federal holiday observed on the last Monday in May to remember all American military personnel who have died in any conflict.
Today we reflect on those who made the supreme sacrifice to preserve our freedom.

Today, 7 members of the Johnson City Fire Department, along with several members of our community, were recognized at the 2026 American Red Cross Real Heroes Event.
They received the “Fire Rescue” award for their actions during a residential structure fire on November 18, 2025.
Shortly after 5:30 a.m., Johnson City firefighters responded to a reported house fire with entrapment. Members of Group C immediately went to work locating the victim and, despite heavy fire conditions, removed him from the structure where he was transported by EMS for medical treatment.
We are proud of the professionalism, courage, and teamwork displayed that morning, and grateful to see these efforts recognized.

Thanks for having us!

Thanks for having us!

Today was VERY exciting in the office if you ask me.

A really nice group of firefighters stopped by to inspect the office, and not only did they make sure everything was safe, they also let me check out the fire truck. Honestly, I’m considering adding “Assistant Fire Chief” to my resume.

10/10 experience. Lots of new friends, big truck, important sniffing opportunities, and I only barked a little.

Thank you to the firefighters for being so kind and making my day.

Members of the Johnson City Fire Department are currently participating in a Rope Rescue Operations Level course—an essential prerequisite for advanced swiftwater rescue training. This hands-on program is being hosted in Johnson City, and instructed by the New York State Academy of Fire Science, bringing top-tier instruction to our area. Throughout this week and next, our firefighters are training alongside members from neighboring departments, strengthening regional coordination and enhancing our ability to respond to complex rescue situations safely and effectively.

This morning at about 6:53 AM, the Johnson City police and fire departments were dispatched to an address on Pleasant Ave for a house fire. Responding units discovered that the second floor of the vacant residence was on fire, and the fire department began their operations.

A JCPD officer observed a male subject, later identified as Lee Parker, walking from the area of the scene. Parker returned to the area a short time later and the officer approached Parker to talk to him. While speaking with Parker, the officer observed a pistol in Parker's coat pocket. The officer secured the firearm, detained Parker, and transported him to the JCPD. Parker does not possess a pistol permit. The firearm in his possession was a loaded, unregistered 9mm handgun without a serial number, commonly referred to as a ghost gun.

Once back at the JCPD, detectives interviewed Parker about the fire and any role he may have played in it. Parker admitted that he had been squatting at the vacant residence and accidentally started the fire.

While at the JCPD, Parker began exhibiting signs of smoke inhalation. Union Volunteer Emergency Squad responded and transported Parker to UHS Wilson Hospital for treatment. Parker remains in JCPD custody and will be arraigned on the following charges:

▪️Criminal Possession of a weapon in the second degree – a class C Felony (3 counts)
▪️Arson in the fourth degree, a class E Felony

Arrestee:
Lee Parker, 67 years old of Johnson City, NY

Even if it only takes a minute to clear a hydrant in the event of a fire, that's an extra minute that one of our firefighters is at the hydrant, instead of searching for victims or putting water on the fire. Thank you for helping us in keeping our community safe!!

🚒 𝗛𝗲𝗹𝗽 𝗨𝘀 𝗛𝗲𝗹𝗽 𝗬𝗼𝘂 — 𝗖𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗙𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝗛𝘆𝗱𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘀

As the snow piles up, we’re asking residents to take a few minutes to 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗹 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝗵𝘆𝗱𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗻𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗼𝗿 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀.

Keeping a 𝟯-𝗳𝗼𝗼𝘁 𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 around hydrants and making them visible from the street allows firefighters to access water quickly during an emergency — saving valuable time when every second matters.

Your help keeps our community safer. Thank you for doing your part!
