Over the course of my career I was blessed to have a number of men and women mentors who had an impact on both my personal life and career. I am grateful for all that they taught me.

Ernie Mills, “What is a person’s word worth?” If you say that you are going to do something do you actually follow through?

Mary Jo O’Sullivan, “Set it up for success.” Take the steps and extra time to make sure that whatever you are doing is successful.

Bob Nourse (West Point grad retired Colonel) “There are days when you unsheathe your sword, march up the hill and do battle, and there are days when you sheathe your sword and live to fight another day.” Pick your battles.

These lessons have served me well and will guide me throughout the rest of my life.

One of the issues that I have found troubling is how the Town of Johnsburg’s budget is structured. I have asked many people if they have a difficult time reading and understanding our budget and the vast majority of them say yes.
I am not an accountant; I did take Accounting 101 in college and passed but barely. However, I spent 16 years in administrative positions where I had a budget that I was responsible for plus I have run 3 small businesses.
I don’t understand why the town budget isn’t easier to read and comprehend. Should I be elected as Supervisor of Johnsburg one of the things that I will do is restructure the town budget so people can read it and know where their tax dollars are going and how they are being spent.

It has been an interesting couple of weeks. Typical of small town politics there are rumors about what I am for, what I’m against and speculation about what I’m going to do if I am elected. Allow me to set the record straight:

1. A while back there was a rumor that I was against Barton Mine and their permit renewal, that is absolutely false. I want Barton Mine to continue and hopefully grow. And as a free market guy I want all of our businesses to prosper and grow. I’m hopeful that, if we can address the housing shortage, we can attract more businesses to Johnsburg and grow our economic base.

2. Earlier this week I had a member of the Johnsburg community reach out because he had heard that I was against the sewer. My response was that the sewer project was passed and work has begun so that ship has sailed. Our job (supervisor and town council) is to ensure that the project comes in on or under budget.

3. I have worked for 6 different colleges/universities and a number of other organizations in my career and the most troubling thing I have seen is when a new leader comes in and tries create a similar environment/culture that they came from. My style is very different. I believe that the best approach is to survey the landscape, get an understanding of the culture and be sure that people are in the best possible position to make use of their strengths.

To move forward in any way with business and economic development Johnsburg needs people and to attract people we need workforce housing. One of my main goals to look at the viability of a Land Bank. A Land Bank allows the town to take houses that have tax liens move the property into the land bank which will clear the tax liens and provide for a clean title. This is one fix to our workforce housing issue. We need more housing solutions but this is at least a start.

I was recently asked “Why did you decide to run for Supervisor?” This was my response; Carole and I attended Town Board meetings during the reevaluation and watched as people who had lived here all their lives made their case for re-examining the process and those requests, by most of the Town Council, were ignored. I stood there in disbelief. Candidly, I was flabbergasted. And let me be clear, Carole and I WERE NOT against the reevaluation, we were against the way it was handled. To me, the primary job of an elected official is to LISTEN to their constituents.
If I am elected to the role of Supervisor, my job is to listen to the residents of Johnsburg and, after considering our citizens thoughtful input, do what is best for the majority of the community. Will everyone be happy with every decision that is made? I would be a fool to think so. In the end it will be my job and the job of the Town Council to do what is best for the community as a whole.
Stay tuned, more to come.
