Did you know the NFA offers online courses for the National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) S-130, S-190, and L-180 classes, enabling firefighters to complete the classroom portions remotely and the hands-on portions in-person with a qualified instructor. Access to these training classes is free of charge, https://www.usfa.fema.gov/nfa/courses/online/self-study.html
☑ The NWCG S-190 course, "Introduction to Wildland Fire Behavior," teaches the primary factors affecting wildfire spread and recognition of hazardous situations. It consists of three online modules, each taking 1 to 3 hours to complete. After finishing the online training, a training officer or fire chief evaluates further training needs before certifying completion.
☑ The NWCG S-130 course, "Firefighter Training (Wildland)," covers foundational skills for wildland firefighters through 12 online modules and a mandatory instructor-led field day. Each module explains concepts and skills to be performed during the field day. Module 12 includes optional knowledge areas like pump operations and fire investigation. Certification is issued after evaluation by a training officer or fire chief.
☑ The NWCG L-180 course, "Human Factors in the Wildland Fire Service," introduces human performance concepts for entry-level operational personnel and other wildland fire service members. It includes an interactive simulation for practicing decision-making skills and applying human factors knowledge to various scenarios.
These courses provide essential training for wildland firefighters, combining online learning with practical, hands-on experience to ensure comprehensive skill development.
