It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of one of our own, Vince Yaich Sr.

Vince gave 52 years of his life as a volunteer firefighter, always stepping up to serve the community. His commitment extended far beyond our local area, as he also answered the call to assist fellow firefighters on numerous western fire details.

A lifetime member of Diligent Fire Company #3, Vince was a familiar face around the station and someone everyone knew they could count on. His knowledge, experience, and steady presence helped shape generations of firefighters within our department.

Being a volunteer firefighter means missing holidays, family time, and important moments, all to make sure others are safe. Vince lived that life every call.

He also spent 35 years as a DCNR Forest Fire Warden with the Weiser Forest District Warden’s Association, continuing his service protecting both the community and the forests.

Vince wasn’t just a firefighter — he was one of us. He’ll be missed around the station and in the fire service as a whole.

Any departments bringing apparatus to the services are asked to limit it to one apparatus per department and to stage on 5th Street next to Jim and Vickie’s Laundromat.

Rest easy, Vince. We’ll take it from here.

Services Information: Memorial funeral service noon Friday, May 29, Edward F. Melber Funeral Home, 524 Center St., Jim Thorpe, with the Rev. Ronald Minner officiating. Memorial visitation 9 a.m.-noon Friday. Interment, private. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his name may be made to the Diligent Fire Co. No. 3, 330 Center Ave., Jim Thorpe, PA 18229.

Last night at 2228 hours, members responded to the scene of a motor vehicle accident at the Jim Thorpe Pet Center. Upon arrival, crews were met with a significant debris field spread across the roadway.

Members immediately went to work assisting with scene cleanup before initiating an area search for the victim. The victim was later located at St. Luke’s Miners Hospital.

We would like to thank all police departments that assisted on scene, as well as Summit Hill Fire Co and Lehighton Ambulance Association for their assistance throughout the incident.

This serves as an important reminder to everyone: never drink and drive. One poor decision can change lives in an instant. Please make the responsible choice—plan ahead, stay safe, and look out for one another.

Jim Thorpe Borough is currently NOT under a burn ban

Warmer, drier conditions still increase the risk of brush and wildfires. If conducting a controlled burn: outdoor burning:

• Keep a safe distance from structures, debris, and woods
• Have a water supply available
• Do not burn in windy conditions
• Never leave a fire unattended
• Always fully extinguish the fire when finished

Carbon County residents are encouraged to notify the Carbon County Communications Center at 570-325-9111 prior to burning.
If your fire gets out of hand, call 911 early.

Members of the Jim Thorpe Fire Department spent this past Monday at the Carbon County Training Center taking part in a joint training with the Lehighton Fire Department.

Crews worked through multiple live scenarios covering a variety of call types, utilizing artificial smoke to simulate real fireground conditions. Trainings like this allow our members to sharpen their skills in a controlled environment while preparing for real-world emergencies.

This longstanding relationship continues to strengthen both departments, helping us build teamwork, communication, and the ability to operate seamlessly together on scene. We look forward to many more opportunities to train side by side.
