Did you know that Jersey City was one of the last stops on the Underground Railroad?

This Juneteenth, reflect on the stories of the tens of thousands of freedom-seekers who sought refuge in the homes of abolitionists and formerly enslaved people who lived in Jersey City--from the secret tunnels of the Sugar House, to the Jackson Brothers of Greenville.

To explore more fascinating Jersey City history, head to the New Jersey Room at the Jersey City Free Public Library. Many thanks to the NJ Room and JCFPL for their archival research that made this video possible.

Nyugen E. Smith, a Caribbean-American interdisciplinary artist from Jersey City, installed his soccer ball piece in front of City Hall for the public art project "The Art of the Game" to celebrate the FIFA World Cup's arrival in New Jersey.

"Many places around the world where this game is a big part of life, many people can't afford to buy a soccer ball," says Smith. "So it becomes tradition to make your own balls out of different types of materials. People of all ages do it, and this work is in honor of them."

Smith's work explores how ritual, memory, and lived experience shape space, identity, and survival. It's fitting that this "Art of the Game" piece—a tribute to the people's sport that can be played almost anywhere—is now displayed in front of the people's house.
