Carmela Guido of North Bergen is the co-recipient of the Dante Alighieri Society of Jersey City’s Lori Sorrentino Hennessey Scholarship for 2026. A resident of North Bergen, Carmela Guido is a graduate of Weehawken High School’s Class of 2026.
The scholarship is awarded to a female high school senior of Italian heritage who will attend a college or university leading to a career in social services. The $7,500.00 scholarship is based on an essay embracing her Italian culture, family values, educational achievements, and her contributions to the community and letters of recommendations.
Ms. Guido plans to attend Ramapo College of New Jersey where she will study nursing, then will pursue a career in both nursing and clinical research. Carmela intends to research autoimmune diseases in children.
Carmela explained in her essay that “giving back has been a part of me since I could remember, and going off to college to learn how to actually make a difference in one’s health excites me to no end…. In my journey to become a nurse, I plan to spend some time in specialties like the NICU and PICU where I can take care of children who are suffering and need a loving hand.”
The Dante Alighieri Society of Jersey City was founded in 1909 by Dr. Luigi Pezze to promote Italian culture, help immigrants assimilate, and establish themselves in Jersey and the surrounding areas. The Dante Alighieri Society of Jersey City continues its mission by expanding to embrace all people of Jersey City, Hudson County, New Jersey, and beyond.
Our motto of “Service Above Self” continues to be the driving force behind our commitment to the community.
