Jericho Fire Department Responds to Construction Site Rescue

At approximately 1450 hours on Friday 8/14, the Jericho Fire Department was alerted by Nassau County 911 Dispatch for a report of a male who had fallen and was possibly unconscious at a construction site.

Chief of Department Kerry Ketsoglou arrived first on scene and determined that two construction workers had fallen approximately 20 feet at a home under construction. One patient was trapped in the sub-basement area of the structure, while the second patient had been removed from the area of the fall by fellow workers prior to the Fire Department’s arrival.

Jericho Fire Department crews immediately began rescue and patient care operations. Responding Jericho units included Chiefs 9401, 9402, 9403, Engine 943, Rescue 949, Ladder 941, Ambulances 946 and 948, Medic 9499, and Fire Police units 9411 and 9424.

Due to the location and circumstances of the incident, multiple agencies assisted with the rescue operation, including the Nassau County Police Department’s Emergency Ambulance Bureau, Emergency Service Unit, and Aviation Bureau, Muttontown - Upper Brookville Police Department, Syosset Fire Department, Hicksville Fire Department, East Norwich Fire Department, and the Bethpage Fire Department Technical Rescue Team.

Working together, crews successfully removed the trapped patient and both patients were transported to area hospitals for further treatment. One patient was transported by Jericho Fire Department Ambulance 946, while the second patient was transported by Nassau County Police Aviation Helicopter 4.

The Jericho Fire Department would like to thank all of the responding agencies and personnel for their assistance and teamwork during this complex rescue operation.

On Thursday, August 20, the Jericho area experienced a severe storm that brought significant flooding, damaging winds, and severe weather across Long Island, including a confirmed tornado touchdown in Atlantic Beach. During the storm period, the Jericho Fire Department responded to two significant alarms.

The first incident was a water rescue on Route 106/107, where two vehicles became stranded in the flooded roadway. Jericho responded with Engine 944, Ambulance 946, and High Water Rescue Vehicle 9433, along with Chiefs 9401, 9402, and 9403. Crews made contact with the occupants of the stranded vehicles and safely assisted them from the flooded area.

Later that evening, at approximately 9:30 p.m., the Jericho Fire Department was alerted for a working structure fire at The Milleridge Inn, 585 North Broadway.

Fire operations were under the command of Jericho Fire Department Chief Ketsoglou. Due to the size and nature of the incident, mutual aid assistance was provided by the Westbury, Syosset, Bethpage, Hicksville, Carle Place, Glenwood, Roslyn, Plainview, and Farmingdale Fire Departments.

Despite the challenging weather conditions, firefighters worked quickly and brought the fire under control in approximately one hour. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Due to wildfires in northern Canada, smoke is making its way through our district. The New York State Department of Health has issued an Air Quality Advisory. The fire department is aware of the situation and monitoring it closely.

Thank you to Melville Volunteer Fire Department and safety dynamics for the extrication training today. Our members learned new tactics to extricate victims from different scenarios. From heavy machinery to large trees.

Sunday night at 10pm, JFD was alerted for a reported air conditioner smoking at a house on Flint Ln. Medic 1 [Ex-Captain Sammartano] quickly confirmed a smoke condition in the residence. The call was upgraded to a working fire after a fire was discovered inside the wall surrounding the A/C unit.

Two handlines were stretched, with one going into operation, to quickly extinguish the fire and prevent further extension.

Operations were under the command of 9401 [Chief Ketsoglou] along with 9402 [Chief Richardson] and 9403 [Chief Foresto]

Thank you to the mutual aid departments from across the 5th and 9th Battalions that assisted us at the scene and standing by for any additional alarms!

In 1974, President Gerald Ford authorized EMS Week to celebrate EMS professionals and the important work they do in our nation’s communities. This year, EMS Week runs from May 17-23.

Each and every week, we recognize and honor our Department and District Paramedics, AEMTs, and EMTs for the hard work they do day in and day out. These dedicated providers respond to emergencies in our community 24/7/365 without hesitation and provide the highest quality medical care in the prehospital setting.

Jericho FD is proud to operate a large fleet of EMS vehicles, including 4 ambulances, 2 flycars, and a UTV.

At 6pm yesterday, we were alerted for an auto accident on the eastbound side of the Long Island Expressway at North Broadway. Upon arrival of Chief Richardson (9402), he found a 2 car MVA with multiple aided.

A Mass Casualty Incident was quickly declared for 7+ patients, including 3 with serious injuries. Mutual aid ambulances to the scene were provided by Syosset, Hicksville, Westbury, and Plainview FD’s, as well as NCPD Emergency Ambulance Bureau. 6 patients were transported by ground to various area hospitals and trauma centers. Additionally, NCPD Aviation Bureau landed a helicopter at the scene to transport a seriously injured child.

The scene was under the command of Chief Ketsoglou (9401). Thank you to all of our mutual aid partners who responded to the scene, as well as the East Norwich Fire Co for standing by in our quarters available for any other alarms.

Shortly after 1pm this afternoon, Jericho FD Dispatch and Nassau County Fire Communications received multiple calls reporting a fire at 27 Maytime Drive. The fire quickly grew to 3 alarms, bringing in mutual aid from across the 5th and 9th Battalions.

4 hand lines were stretched and operated, as well as extensive overhaul performed. Operations were under the command of Assistant Chief Richardson (9402).
