Do you like to garden or would you like to learn about native plants? Well then come volunteer and help us complete our native plant garden at the Jenner Headlands Preserve! We'll be working on it April 11th and 25th from 9am-12:30pm. Park in the lot and walk up past the bathrooms and you'll find us digging in the dirt.

We are excited to report we've recently observed adult steelhead heading up East Branch Russian Gulch to spawn!

Steelhead trout are actually the same species as rainbow trout- the difference being that steelhead have access to the ocean, so they take advantage of that opportunity by migrating out to sea to feed on the ocean's abundance before returning to freshwater rivers to spawn.

Because of this, they grow significantly larger and more powerful than non-migratory trout. Notably, steelhead are iteroparous, meaning they can survive the spawning process and return to the sea to repeat the cycle multiple times, whereas Coho and Chinook salmon die after spawning once.

On a routine off-trail patrol of the preserve, we found a very fresh deer carcass which was covered in grass and debris. This is known as "caching" and is a strong indication that we found a Mountain Lion's kill. And although the big cat was likely nearby and possibly even watching us, in the spirit of scientific investigation and curiosity, we quickly set up a remote wildlife camera and here's what we found:

Wildlife cameras on the Jenner Headlands Preserve are still filming bears regularly, and this recent clip stands out- but I'm struggling to come up with a good caption- maybe you can help?

This , we’re reminded that the parks and preserves that we love to visit are also homes and habitat for our wildlife neighbors. By supporting the organizations that care for these landscapes, we ensure that these cherished spaces continue to inspire and sustain future generations— of people and wildlife.

Last weekend, Dave Barry of West County Hawk Watch led our last raptor hike of the migration season out at the Estero Americano Coast Preserve. It was a fabulously warm day with spectacular vistas and lots of raptor action!

Starting tomorrow the Preserve will be open 7 days a week, so get out there and see these birds of prey yourself.
