The Orange County Community Foundation Inc. is proud to present an $8,000 grant to Families Forward Inc. in support of the Robin's Nest Initiative.

When children are removed from their homes due to unsafe circumstances, the hours that follow can be some of the most difficult of their lives. Too often, they are left waiting for foster placement in Department of Child Services offices or police stations. Robin's Nest is changing that reality by creating a safe, comfortable, trauma-informed environment where children can rest, play, and simply be children while awaiting placement. Named in honor of Robin Brown, Orange County's first CASA director and a lifelong advocate for children, Robin's Nest will be "a soft place to land" during a time of crisis.

Although located in Paoli, Robin's Nest will serve children from Orange County and surrounding communities in partnership with our local Department of Child Services, providing a much-needed regional resource for children facing some of life's most challenging moments.

Congratulations to Families Forward Inc. on this important initiative. We are honored to support a project that will bring comfort, dignity, and hope to children when they need it most.

The Floyd County Library is proud to host the Summer Meals Program for the 8th year in a row! 🎉🥪🍎All youth 0-18 years old can enjoy a FREE lunch at New Albany Central Library every weekday from 12-12:45 PM from June 1 - July 31. No registration is required. Just drop by!

Help us spread the word so people in our community can know about this wonderful program for children.

Family Recovery Courts (FRCs) represent a vital shift in the child welfare system, moving away from a traditional, punitive model toward one centered on healing the entire family. Recognizing that substance use disorder is a complex medical condition rather than a moral failing, FRCs focus on treating the root causes of family instability. They bridge the gap between the judicial system, child welfare agencies, and community providers by using a multidisciplinary team approach. Instead of navigating a confusing maze of isolated requirements, parents are supported by judges, caseworkers, and treatment professionals who all sit at the same table. This collaborative framework ensures that parents receive trauma-informed care and the wraparound support necessary to overcome daily barriers, allowing them to focus on true recovery rather than just strict compliance.

While the FRC model demands rigorous accountability—including frequent court appearances, consistent drug testing, and active treatment participation—it balances those expectations with a heavy safety net of case managers and peer recovery coaches. This high-support, high-accountability environment keeps parents engaged in treatment longer and leads to significantly higher rates of successful family reunification. By stabilizing the home environment and drastically reducing the amount of time children spend in foster care, these programs disrupt generational cycles of trauma and addiction. Ultimately, Family Recovery Courts operate on the proven understanding that the most effective way to protect a vulnerable child is to actively support the healing and recovery of their parents.

We are grateful to Iris from the Clark County Family Recovery Court for taking the time to train our staff. Everyone at Family Time is deeply grateful for her expertise and insight. Her presentation was absolutely fantastic; we loved how she seamlessly blended real-world practicality and hard-earned clarity with deep empathy and the exact kind of humor our field requires. The work we do can be heavy and connecting with peers who truly understand the mission makes all the difference. This was a beautiful reminder of the strength we find in community.

As the winter storm approaches southern Indiana, it is essential for our community to know how to prepare and respond. We want to extend our heartfelt gratitude to Matt and his team at Nomad for their ongoing efforts with White Flag. With forecasts predicting heavy snowfall reaching double digits and dangerous wind chill temperatures dropping to -20 degrees, it’s crucial for everyone to stay informed and take necessary precautions. Preparation can make a significant difference in ensuring the safety of the community we serve.

For those experiencing homelessness in Floyd and Clark County, the winter can bring severe challenges, especially with limited warming stations available. Common places like local libraries and the Salvation Army may be open, but their hours can vary. This weekend, as the storm approaches, it is essential to know that the White Flag shelter at Culbertson Baptist Church 4007 Grant Line road New Albany, will open on Friday at 7 PM and remain operational until 7 AM Monday morning. This offers a vital refuge for those needing warmth and safety during the harsh conditions expected.

Transportation services may face difficulties due to the storm, especially with bus operations expected to be impacted. In light of this situation, we highly recommend that anyone seeking shelter arrive before the worst of the weather hits. Additionally, the White Flag and Thrive will have personnel available for transportation assistance, and Exit 0 will also be providing outreach. If you are unhoused in Clark or Floyd County and need help weathering these extreme temperatures, please communicate with us. We will keep you updated and will continue to support those who need to face the cold outdoors.
