Of the 32 Carnegie libraries built in Texas at the turn of the 20th century, only 13 original buildings are still standing.

In the late 1800s, steel magnate Andrew Carnegie, once the world’s richest man, began giving out grants, part of a philanthropic mission he wrote about in his essay “The Gospel of Wealth.” He funded church organs, exhibition halls, swimming pools, and gymnasiums, but the bulk of his philanthropy went into libraries.

In the United States, his grants built 1,681 public libraries, including 32 in Texas. Today, only 13 of the Carnegie library buildings in Texas remain, and only four—in Ballinger, Franklin, Jefferson, and Stamford—still function as libraries. The rest have been repurposed into museums, event facilities, history centers, and office buildings.

Tyler’s library, built in 1904, has been home to the Smith County Historical Society for more than 40 years. Gainesville’s library, opened in 1914, has housed the Butterfield Stage Players since 1979.

Web Editor Sarah Thurmond visited the Carnegie History Center in downtown Bryan, the oldest existing Carnegie library in the state. Read her story here: https://texashighways.com/culture/inside-the-oldest-remaining-carnegie-library-in-texas/

The Jefferson Carnegie Library would like to recognize The Friends of the Library as well as friends and neighbors of our community for saving our annual 4th of July Pie and Cake Auction! When threatening clouds brought lightning, winds, and heavy rain they acted quickly to relocate the delectables to the Methodist Church and set about pulling together an auction for the next day. The tents and tables were all put away and the town was able to enjoy their fireworks as the storms passed in time. Thank you to everyone who made this annual event a success!

The Friends of the Carnegie Library would like to sincerely thank everyone for your support today of the library's annual cake and pie auction benefitting the children's department books and programs. After the auction was rained out on the 4th, there was a quick pivot to have an in-person silent auction today, the 5th. A huge thank you to our awesome bakers for their beautiful desserts, and to everyone who came out and supported with your generous bids and/or donations. The traditional finale cake was purchased and donated to Avir in Jefferson for their residents to enjoy. They were very happy to receive it!

Winning bids will be announced at 2:30. Please make payment by 3:30.
