Wally began with the city on 6/15/16, and is a key member of our sanitation department as the crew leader. He is as reliable as he is spirited.

The City of Jefferson greatly appreciates the 10 years of commitment and service you have contributed. A great example of sending out positivity and receiving positivity back.

CLOSURE NOTICE:

With this week being the Bell Tower Festival, we want to remind residents that the square and other selected streets will be closed from Thursday through Sunday.

Also, there will be festival set-up occurring out front of City Hall. We will stay open during normal operating hours through Friday.

NEW DEVELOPMENT:

Groundbreaking has officially begun for the Wheldon apartment building!

This new development is located NW of the overpass with the parking lot entry access off of N Maple St.

The City of Jefferson greatly appreciates everyone involved, with special shout-outs to the following companies: KCG Development, Accurate Commercial, Newbury Living, and GCDC.

We understand the need for affordable housing, and the positive impact the Wheldon will have on both current and future residents of Jefferson.

Completion is expected by summer 2027.

BRUSH AND PARK UPDATE:

Brush clean-up has been completed - further pick-up will not occur until the last full week of the month.

We would like to thank our departments, especially wastewater and parks, for their help through the entire process. This assistance allowed for a quick clean-up.

Secondly, Chautauqua Park has received new play equipment. We would appreciate refraining from entering or climbing on the equipment until the entire installation is completed for safety reasons.

CLEAN-UP REMINDER:

To aid our clean-up, we ask that residents follow some guidelines for sticks and branch placement.

1. 10-15 ft. length preferred for capability of skid loader. Anything longer is unmanageable and should be cut down to size.

2. The broken or “butt-end” of the branches should face towards the street.

3. Sticks small enough to carry by hand should be placed separately from larger branches.

4. Please make the piles for clean-up neat and parallel.

We appreciate your cooperation! Following these guidelines allows for the city crew to finish clean-up in a timely manner.

STORM CLEAN-UP:

City Staff will pick up limbs from the storm.
Must be placed in the right-of-way.
Prefer lengths of 12 – 15 feet. Short pieces are harder to handle with the skid loader.
Stack in neat piles.
Butt-end placed to street

Stack smaller pieces neatly so they are easy to pick-up by hand.

Estimated clean-up time is around three weeks.

The brush pile site is open. Take your load as far south as possible and add it to the big pile.

Westwood Area Sidewalk Improvements
City of Jefferson
Jefferson, Iowa

Public Hearing on Proposed Contract Documents and Estimated Costs for Repair or Improvement. A public hearing will be held by the City of Jefferson on the proposed contract documents (plans, specifications and form of contract) and estimated cost for the improvement at its meeting at 5:30 P.M. on June 23, 2026, at 220 North Chestnut Street, Jefferson, Iowa 50129.

Project Description. This project is separated into two locations within Jefferson. Base Bid: Sidewalk construction on West Lincoln Way from Grimmell Rd to Westwood Dr, on north side of Westwood Dr from Briarwood Bend to Grimmell Rd, south side of Westwood Dr from W Lincoln Way to E Rush Ridge Rd and on Grimmell Rd from Westwood Dr to W Lincoln Way for the construction of approximately 8,250 feet of 6' wide PCC sidewalk, 6" thick with 6" modified subbase. Quantities include 5,281 SY of 6" PCC sidewalk, 1,692 SY of 6" PCC driveway, 483 SY of 7” pavement, 7,456 SY of 6" modified subbase and 710 SF of modular block retaining wall along with other misc. items to complete the project. Alternate Bid: 1 block of downtown alley on the east side of Chestnut St between 113 and 115 N Chestnut St. Quantities include 229 SY of 6” PCC pavement, 228 SY of pavement removal, 315 SY of 6” modified subbase, window well and doorway abandonment and blocking, step and handrail construction and other misc. items to complete the project.

At said hearing, the City Council will consider the plans, specifications, proposed form of contract, and estimated total cost for the project, the same now being on file in the office of the City Clerk, 220 North Chestnut Street, Jefferson, Iowa 50129, reference to which is made for a more detailed and complete description of the proposed improvements, and at said time and place the said City Council will also receive and consider any objections to said plans, specifications, estimate of cost, and form of contract made by any interested party.

A Street Sweeping Ordinance (No Parking) for the Square will be in effect from Monday morning 2:00AM to 6:00AM.
