Who Pays LOST?

When a person makes a taxable purchase in Jefferson, they pay a sales tax. The sales tax rate is currently at 7% - 6% state sales tax, plus 1% Local Option Sales Tax (LOST).

LOST is not only paid by Jefferson residents, but also those visitors who make taxable purchases in Jefferson.

Jefferson voters will decide November 3rd, if to re-authorize the existing 1% LOST.

City Hall Closure:

City Hall will be closed Monday, September 7th for Labor Day.

Please note that both garbage and recycling will be pushed back by one day of normal pick-up date.

Westwood Sidewalk Project Update:

There has been a tree cleared at the corner of S Grimmell Rd and W Lincoln Way in preparation for the upcoming construction of the Westwood sidewalk project.

We appreciate our Public Works crew for assisting in the project preparation.

What is LOST?

Jefferson voters will consider reauthorizing the Local Option Sales Tax (LOST), on Tuesday, November 3rd.

LOST is a 1% local sales tax approved by Jefferson voters for a specific purpose: 100% of the revenue is dedicated to the repair, maintenance, replacement, and improvement of Jefferson’s infrastructure.

The tax has been in place for approximately 20 years and is currently scheduled to sunset on June 30th, 2027. Voters will consider removing the sunset date.

The City of Jefferson, IA is accepting applications for a full-time Utility Billing Clerk. Duties include computerized utility billing and payment processing, customer service, receptionist, and general clerical duties. Assists other City departments as required. Salary range is $ 37,752 to $48,235. IPERS and major medical.

Yard waste and Brush Fall Pick-up Dates:

September, 28th - 30th
October, 26th - 28th
November, 9th - 12th

Please note that October will be the last month for brush pick-up, meaning November will be yard waste only, and the last month with pick-up available.

The Parks Department was able to boulder border several different areas down at Daubendiek Park. This includes the separation between the yard waste site and the park, as well as the parking lot.

If they’re claiming they did it all by hand, please don’t believe them.

The Parks Department and the City would also like to extend a thank you to the County Secondary Roads Crew for supplying the boulders.

Mayoral Proclamation:

This past Tuesday, Mayor Craig Berry read a Proclamation recognizing the 150th anniversary of the Centennial Block Building, extending a formal appreciation to the ladies of Why Not Us.

The history of the building is very interesting, and has seen some major renovations throughout the past 150 years.

We have heard the history from Peg Raney, but many ladies of Why Not Us are also well-versed in the building’s story.

Streets Update:

A few crew members of our streets department have been filling several potholes throughout the city.

We ask residents to keep their eyes out for temporary work zones, and appreciate giving our crew members space.

Although it’s not the most glamorous work, it is necessary, and we greatly appreciate our streets crew for getting the job done.
