It has been a busy past 72 hours for our firefighters.

Starting Saturday, 4 members completed 24 hours straight of roll-in scenario, hyper realistic training at the 24 Hour ERS Blitz in Cranberry alongside 13 other apparatus and over 65 firefighters. Members were exposed to realistic scenarios requiring the application of advanced technical rescue and firefighting knowledge.

Sunday at 8:38 PM, crews were dispatched into the Borough of Whitehall for a working house fire with reported entrapment. Engine-1 arrived and assisted with overhaul and cleanup operations.

Then early Monday morning at 12:18 AM, crews were requested into the Borough of Homestead for 3 row houses on fire. Engine-1 arrived and was assigned to Charlie Side operations. Crews operated in the #3 exposure performing fire suppression and overhaul, while Engine-1’s driver secured a water supply and completed the Charlie Side engine’s lay. Crews operated until approximately 3:30 AM before returning to the station.

Despite the demanding previous 48 hours, and being told they could take the day easy, on duty crews, many of whom operated at both fires and the training blitz still completed their daily required shift training by conducting 2.5 hours of engine company operations training at Station #2.

Delayed Post

Four days ago on 4/22/26 at approximately 1:40 PM, 232 Assistant-1 came across smoke coming from the rear of a residence in Jefferson Hills. Upon further investigation, he located a working fire underneath the deck that was rapidly extending into the home. 232 Assistant immediately requested the first alarm assignment while beginning to alert and evacuate the occupants as well as attempting to control the fire to the best of his ability with a neighbors garden hose.

First alarm companies arrived and initiated fire attack along with primary and secondary searches. Crews were met with significant fire and heat conditions throughout all floors of the residence. Due to the volume of fire and extent of involvement, the incident was upgraded to a second alarm.

Firefighters operated on scene for approximately four hours before placing the incident under control and returning to service. Multiple standby companies were utilized throughout the duration of the incident to ensure continued fire protection coverage for the surrounding area.

Jefferson Hills Fire Rescue would like to thank all mutual aid departments and standby companies for their assistance and continued support.

Jefferson Hills Fire Rescue members had a great time participating in the Literacy Under the Lights event at the Intermediate School. Students made their way around to different groups, asking about favorite books and sharing their own as part of a reading scavenger hunt. During the event, everyone also took time to pause and read together as a group before continuing, making it an engaging and meaningful experience. We were proud to be part of such a fun, educational event and take time to connect with the students while promoting the importance of reading within our community.

Jefferson Hills Fire Rescue units were dispatched to the 2000 Blk of Lewis Run Road, along with Jefferson Police, for the report of a cat stuck in a hole. 180 Engine-1 arrived on scene with police and were directed to a hole along the side of a creek, where crews located a cat unable to get out on its own. Police and Fire Crews worked to carefully dig access into the hole to assist with the feline’s extrication, and once a large enough opening was created, the cat was successfully removed.

In true cat fashion, the situation quickly escalated—immediately upon being freed, the cat launched from the arms of rescuers and made a run for it. Jefferson Hills Police and Fire units initiated a brief foot pursuit of the suspect, but despite their best efforts, the cat evaded capture and remains at large.

There is no concern for the safety of residents, as the animal appeared friendly—just not interested in sticking around. The hole the cat was trapped in has since been filled to ensure no other animals find themselves in the same situation.
