Today, I would like to highlight another talented member of our team, Julia Rives, who serves as the Deputy Attorney General for Recruitment and Retention at our office. In this position she works to recruit and retain talented and dedicated attorneys and staff. Working with the recruitment committee, she restarted the AGO intern program and the AGO Practicum, a course designed to introduce law students to the practice of law at the University of Missouri. Julia was recognized for her efforts to train the next generation in 2025 with an award from the Missouri Lawyer’s Foundation for Public Service.
Julia recently said, “The work I’m most proud of is my case work. I prosecuted a woman for first degree murder in 2020 with the Hon. Cris Stevens and both she and her mother received life without the possibility of parole for their roles in arranging the murder of the women’s husband. This year I had the privilege of working with phenomenal members of our Civil Trials team defending retired members of the Missouri State Highway Patrol and the Missouri State Crime Lab in federal court where the Plaintiff claimed they had wrongfully investigated and arrested him for a 1982 murder. The jury found in favor of three of our clients on all counts and I could not have been prouder to represent them, the Missouri State Highway Patrol, and defend our Office’s work on the criminal trial.”
Before joining the Missouri Attorney General’s Office in 2017, Julia clerked for the Eastern District Court of Appeals. In 2019, she served as the first Supreme Court Fellow under Attorney General Eric Schmitt. Julia has successfully defended more than 300 appeals on behalf of the State and argued before the Supreme Court of Missouri six times, earning the David J. Dixon Appellate Advocacy Award in 2020.
I am proud of the work of this office, of Julia, and of our entire team of dedicated public servants who protect Missourians.
