A British officer warned East Tennessee: stand down, or I will cross these mountains and end everything you have built.

These men, including David Crockett’s own father John Crockett, refused to stand down.

They took up arms and left. Left their farms. Left their families on an unprotected frontier with no one between them and the wilderness. They had no uniforms. No orders from any general. No guarantee they would ever come home.

They crossed the mountains anyway. And on October 7, 1780, they surrounded that British officer’s army at Kings Mountain and defeated it in one hour. Thomas Jefferson called it the turn of the tide of the entire Revolution.

That march came through Rocky Mount. The ground you can still walk today.

Thomas Batchelor tells their story on May 28 at 6:00 PM. Batchelor is from this area. He went to ETSU. He walks the trail they marched as an Overmountain Men reenactor. This is not a story from somewhere else. This is a story from right here.
