You may not have heard the term "kinship care" before. But chances are, you know someone living it.

Kinship care is when a grandparent, aunt, uncle, older sibling, or close family friend steps in to care for a child who can't safely stay with their parents.

It happens fast. Often overnight. And most kinship caregivers never planned for it.

They say yes out of love, and then figure out the rest as they go.

September is Kinship Care Month. All month long we're celebrating the families who step up, sharing resources, and reminding kinship caregivers across Central Missouri: you don't have to do this alone.

Happy Grandparents Day to every grandparent who stepped into an even bigger role. 💛

For thousands of children across Missouri, grandparents aren't just Sunday dinners and holiday visits. They're the steady, familiar presence a child can turn to when life changes suddenly.

Many grandparents are raising grandchildren right now — navigating legal systems, school enrollments, appointments and sleepless nights while giving a child the stability and care they need.

If that's you, CMFCAA's Kinship Navigators are here to walk alongside you. From resources and guidance to someone who understands the challenges of kinship care, you don't have to figure it all out alone.

To all the grandparents raising, supporting and loving the children in their lives: Happy Grandparents Day!

Our Jefferson City and Rolla Trunks have been busy helping families prepare for school, sports, homecoming and other special moments.

CMFCAA’s Homecoming Pop-Up on Aug. 29 was a success, and we still have dresses and formal wear available. Families who need something for an upcoming special occasion can contact Julie Fish at [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]) or talk with one of our Trunk Associates.

Our Trunk teams have also displayed teal and purple this month to help raise awareness about the mental health challenges that can affect youth in foster care, adoption, kinship placements, guardianships and beyond.

Supporters can help keep The Trunk stocked by donating new underwear and socks, feminine hygiene products, diapers and pull-ups of all sizes, and general hygiene products.

Thank you to everyone who helps make The Trunk a welcoming and practical resource for families.

Fostering is one of the most impactful ways to support a child in need — but it's not the only way.

There's a place for everyone in this work. Here are a few ways you can show up for children and families in Central Missouri:
⏰ Donate your time: Volunteer on your own, with a friend or as a team. Fill out our volunteer application, and we'll help connect you with opportunities that fit.
💛 Give financially: Your gift helps provide services, resources and support for children and families navigating some of the hardest moments of their lives. Every gift makes a difference.
➡️ Attend a fundraising event: Giving your time and support to our children and families by attending an event means more than you realize.
📖 Share your story: If CMFCAA has made a difference for your family, we'd love to hear about it. Your story could help another family feel less alone — or encourage someone to take that first step.
🌿 Become a respite provider: Provide short-term care that gives foster families a chance to recharge while offering children a safe, supportive place to stay.
📋 Serve on our board: Bring your experience, expertise and passion to the table and help shape the future of support for children and families across Central Missouri.

You don't have to foster to make a difference. You just have to show up. 💛

September is Kinship Care Month, and CMFCAA is grateful for the grandparents, relatives, close family friends and other trusted adults who step in to care for children when they are needed most.

Our Kinship Team partnered with MO Kin-4-Kid to create a kinship caregiver and family appreciation display at the Columbia Mall. Some of the artwork was created by children who attended our recent Rooted Conference.

Kinship caregivers provide safety, stability and connection during difficult times. Their love and commitment help children stay connected to family, community and familiar relationships.

To every kinship caregiver: You are seen, valued and appreciated. Thank you for the difference you make.

Safe is a placement. Supported is a fox-themed backpack because that's her favorite animal.

Safe is having her basic needs met. Supported is someone who asks about her favorite things, and remembers the answers.

Safe is a bed that meets regulations. Supported is someone who stays after the paperwork is done.

CMFCAA's work goes beyond safe. Because every child deserves to feel supported, known and cared for, too. 💛

Caring for a child who has experienced trauma is one of the most meaningful things a person can do. It's also one of the hardest.

Caregiver burnout is real. The weight of the system is real. And sometimes the people giving the most are the ones least likely to ask for help.

If you're feeling overwhelmed, depleted, or like you just can't keep going, please reach out.

⚪️ To the grandparent who rearranged their whole life overnight.
⚪️ The aunt who said yes before she even knew what yes would require.
⚪️ The family friend who showed up when a child needed them most.

You may not have planned for this. You just had love, and you found a way to make it work.

Kinship caregivers are some of the most quietly heroic people in a child's life. They help children stay connected to the people, places and traditions that feel familiar during some of the hardest moments of their lives.

This month, and every month, CMFCAA sees you. And we're here to help you keep going.
