Did you know Civic Season kicks off tomorrow with Juneteenth?

Held between our newest and oldest federal holidays, Juneteenth and July 4th, Civic Season kicks off the year ahead with events, activities and celebrations.

This summer is extra special because July 4th, 2026 marks 250 years since the Declaration of Independence was signed. The U.S. 250th anniversary arrives just as the largest youth generation in American history enters adulthood.

Young people are writing the next chapter of our nation’s story with Civic Season programs like Slice of History Pizza Parties and National Youth Takeover Day, fueled by Youth250.

🎉📣Introducing our new Show Me Service Award Highlights!📣🎉

The first awardee we'd like to highlight is Helen Crowder!

Helen is a volunteer driver that provides rides to residents in Henry County, Missouri. She provides transportation beyond standard business hours - early mornings, evenings, and weekends. Her impact is profound. She regularly travels far to take residents to essential medical appointments, grocery stores, and workplaces.

Many of the people she serves cannot drive or do not have access to a vehicle. She is the top driver for the state’s largest volunteer driver network, New Growth Transit. Her leadership addresses immediate needs and creates opportunities for those who need it. Without Helen’s support, they would struggle to receive critical medical care, obtain basic necessities, or maintain employment.

Her dedication helps ensure that rural residents can not only get where they need to go but also continue to thrive. We are so grateful for the impact you are making, Helen!

A U.S. Army Veteran, Frank Jung began his career as a Military Policeman and spent 11 years in service as a MP Dog Handler, Supervisor, and Explosive Ordinance Disposal Technician before re-routing his career to law. He received his undergraduate degree from Columbia College and a law degree from Michigan State College of Law.

For over 35 years, Frank has worked for the State of Missouri under the Attorney General, Office of Administration, Gaming Commission, State Auditor, Office of Prosecution Services, the Secretary of State, and serves as the General Counsel for the Missouri Lieutenant Governor, David Wasinger. Frank brings his expertise to the Missouri Community Service Commission by serving as commissioner proxy for the Lt. Governor's Office.

The team visited the Stars, Stripes, and Celebrations Exhibit developed by Missouri Humanities and Kinder Institute on Constitutional Democracy.

Last month, Deputy Director Abby Farrow traveled to DC to attend the "When Communities Need Us Most: Empowering AmeriCorps Partners to Lead in Times Crisis" convening, hosted by AmeriCorps and American University.

When crisis strikes communities, AmeriCorps programs often become lifelines - able to mobilize quickly in ways many organizations cannot. Attendees dug into topics and trainings such as:

- Partnerships in Crisis Response
- Grounding Crisis Response in Research
- Mobilizing Volunteers in Crisis
- AmeriCorps Emergency Management Simulation Experience

We're grateful to be part of a nation-wide network that offers these collaborative learning opportunities!

It's a new week with a new : Gary Sriperumbudoor!

Appointed to the Missouri Community Service Commission by Governor Parson in March 2021, Gary has just recently celebrated five years with the commission. His commitment to civic engagement, however, began in 2016. Gary is proudly active with organizations in the St. Louis area, including the American Cricket Academy and Club, Loaves and Fishes, and the Chesterfield City Council.

He believes meaningful service should be consistent and intentional, with individuals contributing regularly—whether through their time or financial support—to address the needs of underprivileged and vulnerable populations.
