Scam Alert

July 14, 2026

The Cole County Sheriff's Office is once again receiving reports of a scam involving callers claiming that individuals failed to appear for jury duty or missed a court appearance.

The scammers identify themselves as sheriff's deputies and tell victims they have an outstanding warrant because they missed jury duty or failed to appear in court. They then demand immediate payment to avoid being arrested.

In some cases, the scammers ask victims to meet them at the Sheriff's Office. They may also threaten that if the victim hangs up the phone, deputies will come arrest them immediately. These callers are often very aggressive, convincing, and even use answering services to appear legitimate.

Remember: Scammers can "spoof" caller ID, making it appear that the call is coming from the Cole County Sheriff's Office or another law enforcement agency. Do not rely on the caller ID to determine whether the call is legitimate.

The Cole County Sheriff's Office will never demand payment over the phone to avoid arrest. We do not accept Bitcoin, gift cards, CoinFlip kiosks, Venmo, Cash App, or any other electronic payment method to resolve warrants, jury duty issues, or court matters. If someone requests payment using any of these methods, it is a scam.

If you receive one of these calls:

• Hang up immediately.
• Do not send money or provide personal information.
• Do not call back the number provided by the caller or rely on the number displayed on your caller ID, as both can be manipulated.
• If you have any doubt, contact the Cole County Sheriff's Office directly at 573-634-9160, or independently look up and call the appropriate court clerk or law enforcement agency.

Please share this message with your family, friends, and neighbors—especially older adults, who are often targeted by these scams
Remember, we will not call you and tell you if you have a warrant. We show up, in person, and serve it.
