Even in retirement, your safety matters. Whether you're heading to lunch with friends or visiting family, make it a habit: seatbelt on, phone off. MPERS supports the Buckle Up Phone Down initiative to keep our roads safer for everyone.

Let’s lead by example. Buckle up. Put the phone down. Stay safe.

📸 Building the Broadway Bridge: Piers Under Construction, 1955

This 1955 image captures the early stages of the Broadway Bridge’s construction over the Missouri River in Kansas City. Officially begun on November 11, 1954, the project was a response to postwar traffic demands and vulnerabilities exposed by the Great Flood of 1951. By 1955, crews were erecting the massive piers that would support the triple-arch structure, using over 8,000 tons of structural steel. Despite labor disputes, most notably a Teamsters strike in late 1955, the bridge was completed and opened to traffic on September 9, 1956.

Prior to this, all driver examiners were commissioned officers. License applicants in Kansas City and St. Louis had been examined by officers of the police departments of those cities before the civilian examiners assumed their duties.

📸 Pouring a Highway Slab, St. Louis, 1955

This 1955 image captures a crew pouring a concrete highway slab in St. Louis during a period of rapid infrastructure expansion. As automobile ownership surged in the 1950s, Missouri invested heavily in modernizing its urban roadways. These projects laid the groundwork for the coming Interstate era, just one year before the Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1956 launched the national Interstate Highway System.
