Training Day!

This morning's training was in two parts. The first was chainsaw training, with a focus on chainsaw use in wildland fire fighting. We covered the skills necessary to safely use and maintain chainsaws and the strategies around evaluating when and where on trees to initiate cuts to minimize risks. The second part of our training session was a Hen Blade nozzle demo by Kevin from HEN Nozzles. We got to try out their new Blade nozzles in comparison to our current nozzles and in relation to the different Hen nozzles. We were impressed with the technology incorporated in them that makes it possible for a lone firefighter to handle the nozzle, vs. the normal two, with much lower pressure at the nozzle while still delivering similar water volumes. This frees up manpower, is easier to handle which reduces fatigue, while also delivering a stream of larger water droplets that are more effective at fire suppression than normal fog nozzles. All in all, a good, educational day of hands-on training.

We are thankful for all of our members who dedicate time to serve our community. Last Saturday, we recognized some members who were nominated by their peers and then selected by a third party panel.

Glen Apgar - Firefighter of the Year (not pictured)
Tim McCloskey - Rookie Firefighter of the Year
Lois Dahl - EMT of the Year
Julie Harp - Auxiliary Member of the Year

It is good for a team to take time to reflect and celebrate the service we provide to the community.

Fire Hydrant Testing Thursday, May 7th and Friday, May 8th

Update: Testing is complete as of noon, Friday, May 8th, with the exception of the nine hydrants skipped until the roadwork is complete. Those will be completed at a date still tbd.

Annual fire hydrant testing in Jasper Highlands will begin Thursday, May 7 at 7:30 am and will continue through Friday, May 8th. With the road repairs underway on Jasper Highlands Boulevard, we will not be testing the nine hydrants within the construction zone and associated side streets until after the road repairs are completed. Our plan is to start on the River Bluffs side of JH, moving to the Raulston Falls side when River Bluffs is completed.

All hydrants will be inspected, flushed and the water pressure tested. This testing is required annually, and is important to ensure that the hydrants are fully functional and ready for action. This testing requires data be collected from two and possibly three successive hydrants, so you can expect to see our team working at multiple hydrants simultaneously and leapfrogging to the next hydrants. We will update this post when testing is completed. Until then, please slow down and use extra caution around our vehicles and our team members conducting the testing. Thanks as always for your cooperation and support!

Prescribed Burn Planned for Today, Wednesday, April 22nd in the Conservation Area Adjacent to Jasper Highlands.

There is a prescribed/controlled burn currently planned for today, Wednesday, April 22nd, in the conservation area adjacent to Jasper Highlands, conditions permitting. This burn will be managed by the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA). Today's prescribed burn will be in Units 10 and 11 on the attached map, to the east of Raulston Falls Road, depending on manpower availability.

As additional background, here is the text of our original August 14th, 2024, post on this topic.

As JH residents, most of you are aware of the privately owned lands and roads with restricted access that are adjacent to Jasper Highlands. Much of this land is pine forest. In order to effectively manage these forest lands for lumber, wildlife and fire safety, the owners have partnered with the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency and Quail Forever to formulate a management plan. This plan includes prescribed controlled burns. This land will be partitioned into tracts which will have installed fire lines, with the tracts to be burned on a rotational basis over the coming years. The property owners have engaged with us to open communication and safety during these controlled burns. Current plans are that controlled burns will be conducted annually from September through April, with 4 to 5 controlled burns over the 8-month period. The burns will follow all state and local regulations and will be carefully planned and performed only when the weather allows a safe burn, with little to no wind, which will allow the smoke to dissipate with little to no direct impact on Jasper Highlands.
We will update you as the burns are scheduled.
We believe that this management plan will be good for not only the property owners, but for JH residents as well since this program will over time dramatically reduce the amount of flammable forest debris on the ground, thus dramatically reducing the risk of a massive wildland fire roaring into Jasper Highlands. Since many of you are from California, and we’ve all seen the massive wildfires out west this year, we can all appreciate the need for this and the long-term benefits of this proactive program.
Thank you for your support and collaboration.

Josh Martell Presents Two Unique American Flags to the JHFD

Jasper Highlands Resident Josh Martell dropped in to our Tuesday evening training session to present us with two unique American flags, one for each of our stations. The flags are made of upcycled fire hoses from a department in Colorado. Mr. Martel tells us the project was a joint effort between David Park (hose), Trina Saunder (star pattern), Anna Martell (plywood) with Josh Martell doing the painting, assembly and delivery. We appreciate the thoughtfulness, the time and the effort that went into this gift, as well as the kind and supportive comments he made to our membership at delivery. Thanks Josh, David, Trina and Anna! We will proudly display these at our stations!

No Burn Permits Extended for Monday and Tuesday, April 13th and 14th

Fire danger conditions are high today, April 13, 2026, and tomorrow, April 14, 2026. These elevated conditions may continue through the remainder of the week unless we receive significant rainfall, which is not currently in the forecast.
No burn permits will be issued today or tomorrow, and this restriction may be extended further into the week depending on weather conditions. The planned prescribed burn for today is also cancelled due to fire danger conditions.
