KEEPING YOU INFORMED
Recently I had the honor of speaking to members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 8095, and the American Legion Post 215, where I was able to inform them on Property Tax exemptions that may be available to them should they have a service connected disability. Unfortunately, there are no exemptions just for honorably serving, BUT if you suffer from a disability as a result of your service, there may be some property tax benefits that you should take advantage of. To apply you will need to provide some supporting documentation from the Department of Veterans Affairs, such as your Disability Decision Letter, and your DD-214 and you will need to file by March 1, 2026.
Here is a list of the exemptions that are available, should you meet the qualification specifications.
• Service Connected Total and Permanent Disability (100% Exemption on your Homestead Property)
• Veterans Disabled 10% or Greater ($5000 off of your taxable value)
• Veterans Age 65 or Older with a Combat-Related Disability (Discount Amount Varies according to your level of disability)
• Veterans Confined to a Wheelchair (100% Exemption on your Homestead Property)
Other Veteran Related and Servicemember Exemptions
• Deployed Servicemembers (you may be eligible for an exemption for the time you are deployed to certain military campaigns)
Surviving Spouse of Veteran Benefits
• Surviving Spouse of a Veteran Who Died on Active Duty
• Surviving spouse of a Totally and Permanently Disabled Veteran or Veteran Aged 65 and Older with a Combat-Related Disability
• Surviving Spouse of a Veteran Disabled 10% or Greater
• Surviving Spouse of a Veteran Confined to a Wheelchair
Each exemption has specific criteria that must be met to qualify.
