I don't know if the last week was any indication of what the rest of the summer will be like as far as heat, but here is a friendly reminder from your concerned-for-your-safety-park interpreter. ๐Ÿ’•

Please take a moment to read over heat exhaustion and heat stroke warning signs. This knowledge could save your, or someone else's life.

I know people (myself included) look forward to the sunrise video every Saturday, but I am out of town this weekend (forgive me!) which means no new sunrise today, so you're stuck with seeing last weeks' again.

And as of now, next Saturday, you'll be getting a sunset video instead as I am doing a night sky program that night (weather permitting)!

Which is still a gorgeous one in its own right.

Anyway, Happy Saturday and enjoy your weekend!!

Join our ranger this coming Tuesday, the 16th, for a night sky program!

Learn all about what you can see in space including the moon, stars, constellations, and planets while looking through telescopes!

A few asks if you decide to attend:

In order to allow for as little light pollution from cars, phones, or flashlights as possible, please look at the map included to see where I will be and where you should park. 'X' is me and the line is parking.

I promise that as long as you walk on the road, you will not trip over anything between your car and myself. Why am I asking this?

It takes a minimum of 25 minutes for your eyes to adjust to the darkness, and for a night sky program, you need that darkness. Any disruption at any time, whether that be from headlights or phone light, will just reset that 25 minutes. Speaking of phone lights, I ask that you please turn off or keep them in your pocket, as even light as small as that can disrupt our night vision.

If you have any sort of red light, that is more than encouraged as red light does not interfere with night sky viewing.

There will be a talk starting at 8:45 with actual night sky viewing around 9:00.

*Please note: This program is subject to cancellation based on rain and/or cloud cover. I will update this post and our website if we have to cancel.

The cutest little capture by Ashley M.! ๐Ÿ“ธ

A giant jump packed into a very small body; the bold jumping spider doesn't build a web to catch their prey. Instead, they silently stalk and then pounce on their unsuspecting prey. That doesn't mean they can't produce silk, however. When this spider jumps, they pounce through powerful back legs and also produce a thread that, if they jump and don't land where intended, acts as a safety net of sorts.

Both sexes are only about .5" in size so they're incredibly tiny, but their colors are bold and distinct. Their legs alternate colorings of white and blackish/blue and their entire body is covered in very coarse hairs.

Jumping spiders are impressive in that they can easily jump over 20 times their body length, roughly around a 12" jump! If spiders had a long jump competition, they would win every time.

Also equally impressive are their eyes in not only their arrangement but size. They have a front row of four eyes that are enlarged to help them see really well, while the second and third rows are a little farther back.

Like all spiders, they're important to the ecosystems they inhabit by controlling the populations of pests we don't necessarily like (even more than spiders).

Thank you, Ashley, for sending in this photo!
