We traveled to American Samoa tonight where we discovered the most unusual U.S. territory, a political anomaly, where the laws out of Washington DC hold very little weight. William McKinley, desperate to control part of Samoa, negotiated with the Matai, the chiefs. The chiefs, ever mindful of the future of Samoa, would sign the deeds of cessation only if their rules and laws would remain in place. President McKinley accepted the terms with the caveat that they will not become U.S. citizens, but rather nationals. Thus American Samoa became a territory. We tasted the flavors of Samoa, heard legends and myths of the region, and painted their beautiful hibiscus flowers. Next month we travel to the American southwest.

We had sunshine and lots of creativity this morning at the library. Kids did some rock painting, weaving crafts with cardboard, shadow drawing, ribbon sticks and more. Great job everyone! Thank you to Abby with Mentors For Youth for being here today too!
