Today, four detectives with the Jasper Police Department successfully completed the “Conducting Professional Background Investigations” course hosted through the Alabama Community College System in cooperation with the Alabama Municipal Insurance Corporation and the Alabama Peace Officers Standards & Training Commission.

The course focused on topics including professional background investigations, APOSTC compliance, hiring best practices, mental health evaluations, polygraph examinations, and the importance of maintaining ethical standards within the law enforcement profession.

Training such as this plays an important role in helping law enforcement agencies make informed hiring decisions and maintain high professional standards. By strengthening the background investigation process and reinforcing best practices, the knowledge gained through this course helps our department continue working toward hiring qualified, ethical, and community-focused officers to serve the citizens of Jasper.

Chief Poe and the Jasper Police Department congratulate these detectives on their successful completion of the course and their continued commitment to professionalism and excellence in law enforcement.

Today, we pause to remember and honor the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. Memorial Day is more than a long weekend, it is a solemn reminder of the cost of the freedoms we enjoy every day.

The Jasper Police Department proudly stands alongside our community in honoring those who gave their lives while serving in the United States Armed Forces. We remember their courage, their sacrifice, and the families who continue to carry their memory.

As we gather with friends and family this Memorial Day, we encourage everyone to take a moment to reflect on the true meaning of the day and to remember those who never made it home.

May we never forget the heroes who gave everything for our nation.

The Jasper Police Department would like to inform the public of a gas leak that was detected at the Chevron located near the Highway 5 and Highway 195 split.

At this time, the leak is extremely minor and is barely registering on monitoring equipment. Officials have confirmed that the leak is not at combustible levels and there is currently no danger to the public.

The Jasper Police Department, Jasper Fire Department, and Walker County EMA are on scene and continuing to monitor the situation while repair crews work to address the issue over the next couple of days. Walker County EMA has also been in contact with the State of Alabama EMA as well as the Alabama Department of Environmental Management and appropriate procedures are being followed.

Out of an abundance of caution, the Chevron gas station will not be selling fuel during repairs but will remain open for other sales.

“This is a precautionary response and we want the public to know there is no immediate danger,” said Chief J.C. Poe. “Our officers, firefighters, EMA personnel, and repair crews are working together to ensure the situation is handled safely and appropriately while keeping the community informed.”

This post is simply intended to keep the public informed. We appreciate everyone’s patience and cooperation while repairs are completed.

Today, our community gathered for a deeply moving Peace Officers Memorial Day service. We came together to stand as a united front and remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. This day serves as a powerful reminder of the profound debt we owe to those who protect and serve, and the enduring legacy of honor they leave behind.

To the families and friends of our fallen officers: thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Your presence today was a beautiful testament to their memory. Thank you for allowing us the privilege of standing beside you, sharing in your grief, and helping to keep the memories of your loved ones alive. You will always be a part of our law enforcement family.

Our sincere thanks to FOP President Don Frasier, FOP Vice President Terry Stripling, Mayor Josh Gates, Walker County Commission Chairman Steve Miller, District Attorney Bill Adair, Assistant District Attorney Bryan Warren, Sheriff Nick Smith, and Pastor Adam Hicks of Desperation Church for their leadership, comforting words, and support.

We also extend a special thank you to Evie Moore for her beautiful rendition of Amazing Grace, and to Oakman High School's Gracie Dickerson for her moving performance of Taps.

"We must never forget the price that was paid for our safety. The courage of our fallen officers lives on in the community they protected, and it is our sacred duty to ensure their sacrifice is remembered for generations to come." — Chief of Police JC Poe Jr.

Thank you again to everyone who attended, watched, or said a prayer for our law enforcement community today. Together, we ensure that our heroes are never forgotten.

As part of National Police Week, the Jasper Police Department continues honoring the memory of the officers from our agency who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

Today, we remember Officer James Denver Hobbs.

Officer Hobbs suffered serious injuries in a line-of-duty motorcycle accident on April 29, 2003. Though he fought the effects of those injuries for years afterward, his health was permanently impacted, and he later passed away on December 11, 2014.

Officer Hobbs’ service and sacrifice remain an important part of the history of the Jasper Police Department. His dedication to serving the community and the lasting impact of his sacrifice will not be forgotten.

During National Police Week, we proudly honor and remember Officer Hobbs and all officers who gave so much in service to others.

As part of National Police Week, the Jasper Police Department continues honoring the memory of the officers from our agency who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

Today, we remember Officer Stewart “Buddy” Beasley Jr.

Officer Beasley was killed in the line of duty on April 10, 1995, while attempting to stop a speeding vehicle along U.S. Highway 78. While catching up to the violator on his police motorcycle, another vehicle pulled into his path from a side street, causing a crash. Officer Beasley was transported to Carraway Methodist Medical Center, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Officer Beasley had served with the Jasper Police Department for five years. He was survived by his wife and parents.

Though many years have passed since his End of Watch, Officer Beasley’s service and sacrifice remain an important part of the history of this department. We proudly honor and remember him during National Police Week.

During National Police Week, the Jasper Police Department will take time throughout the week to honor and remember the officers from our agency who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

Their service, dedication, and sacrifice helped shape the department and community we know today. While their End of Watch may have been many years ago, their memory and legacy continue to live on within the Jasper Police Department. Each day this week, we will share and remember one of our fallen officers so their sacrifice is never forgotten.

Today, we honor and remember Officer John Alfred Salter Sr.

Officer Salter was killed in the line of duty on October 13, 1944, while attempting to serve warrants alongside fellow officers at a residence on East 18th Street. After knocking on the door, the suspect refused to come outside and opened fire, striking Officer Salter. He was transported to People’s Hospital, where he later passed away from his injuries.

Officer Salter had served in law enforcement for at least 17 years. He was survived by his wife, two sons, one daughter, one granddaughter, four brothers, and four sisters.

More than 80 years later, Officer Salter’s sacrifice and dedication to serving the community are not forgotten. The Jasper Police Department proudly honors his memory and service.

Never Forgotten. Forever Honored.

This week, the Jasper Police Department proudly joins communities across the country in recognizing National Police Week.

National Police Week is a time to recognize and thank the men and women who work in law enforcement and public safety, but most of all, it is a time to remember the officers who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their communities. Every day, from patrol officers to detectives and SRO’s to training staff, they work tirelessly to serve others and answer the call when needed most.

We are grateful for all law enforcement personnel who continue working to keep their neighborhoods safe while serving with integrity and commitment.

We also want to thank the families, friends, and supporters who stand beside those in uniform, or those who have felt the loss of a loved one who served this community. Your support makes a difference every single day.

Chief Poe and the Jasper Police Department appreciate the continued trust and support of our community as we work together to serve the City of Jasper.
