Warm-Season Lawn Care in Early Spring

Warm-season grasses (bermudagrass, zoysia, centipede) stay dormant through winter and begin growing when temperatures warm in spring. Proper timing is critical for a healthy lawn.

Wait to fertilize
Do NOT apply nitrogen until soil temperature reaches ~65°F and grass is actively growing
Fertilizing too early encourages weeds and weak growth
Always follow soil test recommendations

UGA tip: Spring nitrogen should wait until consistent green-up.

Apply pre-emergent herbicide (if needed)
Apply before summer weeds germinate
Usually late winter to early spring in North Georgia
Helps prevent crabgrass, goosegrass, and other annual weeds

Mow only after green-up begins
First mowing should remove winter debris only
Never remove more than 1/3 of the blade
Keep mower height correct for your grass type

Check soil pH & fertility
Best pH for most warm-season turf: about 5.5–6.5
Soil test before adding fertilizer or lime
UGA soil tests give exact recommendations

Avoid heavy watering in early spring
Dormant grass needs little water
Overwatering encourages disease and weeds

Be patient — warm-season lawns green up late
These grasses grow best in warm weather

Full growth usually starts in late spring
Warm-season turf grows actively May–September in Georgia.
