A transparent and open Walker County School System will be one of my priorities as Superintendent. I will encourage the Board of Education to have public comments at all meetings and will answer any questions presented to me. Additionally, in recent years there have been many contracts issued by the administration that appear to have been non-compliant with Alabama Law. Section 16-8-40(b) of the Alabama Code in part states "...all contracts shall be made after resolutions have been adopted by the board and spread upon its minutes." In my opinion this means every contract should be presented to the Board of Education at an open meeting for approval. Upon a review of the minutes of the Walker County Board of Education there are many individuals who have received pay for services with out Board approval of contracts.

Please tell me your thoughts on this and SHARE my message.

Join us tonight at Los Reyes from 6-10 pm as we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with music and fellowship.

Many years ago, I had the privilege of traveling to Ireland. I must admit I knew nothing about St. Patrick except the legend that he ran the snakes out of Ireland. St. Patrick’s story is much more than this. His story is one of endurance, strength, hardship and unwavering faith in God.

St. Patrick was taken from his native land, Wales, and brought to Ireland as a slave. While herding sheep on Slemish Mountain he developed a unique closeness to God. He finally escaped and returned to Wales. In a dream, he was told to return to the hostile environment of pagan Ireland. He obeyed and was instrumental in converting thousands to Christianity.

I remember looking up Croagh Patrick in County Mayo, it’s a mountain that St Patrick walked up barefooted and fasted for 40 days during Lent as a reminder of Jesus’ 40 days in the wilderness. What must those 40 days have been like for him?

He used the three-leafed shamrock as an example of Christianity. Ultimately the conversion of a King, St. Patrick baptized him, marked the end of paganism.

Today we celebrate the life of St. Patrick on the date of his death 1,557 years later.

Letter to the Editor (page A6)
Guin: Shocked, but not surprised, by GOP decision

I am shocked but not surprised, the party insiders that dictate who is and is not a Republican decided to deny my place on the ballot in the race for Superintendent of Education. Since I am married to a former Democrat official they assume to know what's in my heart. Therefore, I assume that they never disagree with their spouses on anything.
The truth is I'm an RNC member, a member of the Alabama GOP Capitol Club and a member of national organization devoted to electing conservative women to office, Winning for Women. I am a strong supporter of Senator Reed, Senator Shelby and Congressman Aderholt. I believe in fiscal conservatism, limited government, lower taxes and less regulations. Government closest to the people governs best. That's especially true for a school system.
The message sent by the local party and state party, dominated by a two-thirds supermajority of men, is proof that in our area and state, aggressive women leaders are frowned upon. After all, there are only 4 Republican women out of 135 state legislators and only 2 Republican women elected to office in Walker County. Clearly, I have been treated differently than past and present male Democratic officeholders who have been allowed to seek office on the Republican ticket in June, such as former Democrat Congressman Bobby Bright who voted for Nancy Pelosi for Speaker.
Unfortunately, the party officials in their smoked filled back rooms want to limit your choices in terms of who to vote for. This is not the party of President Ronald Reagan, who too was once a Democrat. President Reagan said, "Democracy is worth dying for because it's the most deeply honorable form of government ever devised by man…This democracy of ours, which sometimes we've treated so lightly, is more than ever a comfortable cloak, so let us not tear is asunder, for no man knows, once it is destroyed, where or when he (or she) will find its protective warmth again." Unfortunately, democracy has been attacked by a hand full of people.
It is hard to accept that these few people have decided I'm not a good enough member of the party to run under their banner and the gall to think they know better than the voters of Walker County! As a voter, you should have the opportunity to either vote for or against me. Excluding a person who meets all of the qualifications for a particular office seems un-American.
The problems with our education leadership are so bad that I was getting calls and texts and messages encouraging me to run as an Independent before the state republican steering committee decision. The response to my Facebook post following the decision of the state party has been overwhelming. People I've never heard of have asked me to continue the fight and run as an independent candidate.
One thing is for sure and that is I'm not going to stop trying to improve the public schools of Walker County.

I am shocked but not surprised, the party insiders that dictate who is and is not a Republican decided to deny my place on the ballot in the race for Superintendent of Education. Since I am married to a former Democrat official they assume to know what's in my heart. (And I assume that they never disagree with their spouses on anything) 🙄.

Unfortunately, the party officials in their smoked filled back rooms want to limit your choices in terms of who to vote for. It reminds me of the Bill Baxley and Charlie Graddick election where the election was stolen from Graddick by party bosses. Years later Graddick said, "That was a dark day for how things should be done in the election process. They shot themselves in the foot."

The problems with our education leadership are so concerning that I was getting calls and texts and messages encouraging me to run as an Independent before today's decision. I will consider that in the coming days. For now, I want to consult with my family and friends as well as pray for God's guidance in my next steps.

It is hard to accept that these few people have decided I'm not a good enough member of the party to run under their banner and the gall to think they know better than the voters of Walker County!

I am traveling to Montgomery this morning to meet with the State Republican Steering Committee. I have 7 minutes to discuss why I am a Republican. The Walker County Republican Chairman has 7 minutes to say why I was not given ballot access. The Committee then has 3 minutes to ask me questions. Please PRAY for me and the conservative movement. Citizens deserve the right to vote on all candidates

Posted Sunday, February 18, 2018

DAILY MOUNTAIN EAGLE

Republican leaders in Walker County recently chose to deny two area candidates the ability to be on the June 5 Primary Election ballot as a member of their party.Mike Cole, a candidate for sheriff, and Tanya Guin, a candidate for school board superintendent, were the only two people attempting to qualify for the election who were denied.

Candidates wanting to run on the GOP ticket in Walker County have had to go before the Walker County Republican Party Screening Committee. In January, candidates received word from the Walker County Republican Party Executive Committee if they had been accepted or not.

Cole has announced on Facebook recently he has decided to run as an independent candidate for sheriff (which he says will require approximately 800 signatures), while Guin is appealing her denial to the state GOP.

The Daily Mountain Eagle takes issue with the process. A group of less than 20 people should not determine if a person is fit to be on the ballot – that should be up to the voters to decide. Committees and groups picking candidates is one reason why so many people are tired of politics. The voters of Walker County should settle the issue of who should be the next sheriff or school board superintendent.

While no official comment has been given from the Walker County Republican Party, the candidates who were rejected have suggested they were denied for not being Republican enough in the eyes of the secret committee. Many of the elected officials in Walker County are former Democrats. That reasoning doesn’t hold water.

It was only a short time ago that all our elected officials were Democrats. A change in the political tides in the last 20 years have made it to where it’s much easier locally to win an election as a Republican. Party politics ruined Washington and Montgomery years ago, and it is slowly ruining smaller forms of government.

Our community is small and tight-knit. If someone is unfit for office, the voters will know that. Of course, that might not stop the citizenry from voting for that person. The point is that local folks know each other, and it is our opinion that it should be left up to the citizens who go to the polls to decide who should and should not be in office.

Thank you for your support. Bridget Tannehill recently posted the following on Facebook.

My choice for Walker County Superintendent of Education is Dr. Tanya Guin. This decision reaches far beyond the scope of our friendship. It is rooted in the demonstrations of her leadership that I have witnessed over the past ten years.
Lao Tzu, an ancient Chinese philosopher, once stated, “The wicked leader is he who the people despise. The good leader is he who the people revere. The great leader is he who the people say, ‘we did it ourselves’.”
Dr. Guin is a great leader. She understands that influence is more effective than authority. Managing people creates an atmosphere of anxiety, inferiority, and suspicion. Dr. Guin empowers people to do their job successfully. Perspective and understanding is the vitality of her leadership, and the framework of that vitality is her passion for doing what is best for kids.
