As followers of our page know, on January 1, 2018 the Onondaga County Department of Correction was placed under the umbrella of the Sheriff’s Office, finally unifying the agencies after over 100 years of side-by-side operations. Firm supporters of inter-agency cooperation, staff of both the Custody and Correction Departments have worked together to make this transition as smooth and effective as possible, to benefit officers, the inmate population, and the community they serve. The work is far from over, but the benefits are already clear.

In order to better serve our social media community, the Correction Department page will no longer be posting content as of December 31, 2018. We have always shared posts with the Sheriff’s Office page and will continue to update followers of current events there. If you don’t already follow the Onondaga County Sheriff's Office, give it a look and continue to show your support. We look forward to continuing the mission and serving our great community.

From all of the staff (and especially the page administrator) at the Correction Department, thank you for being with us for this part of our journey.

Onondaga County Sheriff's Office Correction and Custody Departments teamed up with Chittenango Police at Texas Roadhouse this weekend to help raise money for Special Olympics athletes. Officers interacted with patrons for a few hours on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, generating donations which totaled $2586!

The Central New York community always comes up big at these events and we cannot stress enough that Special Olympics programs would not be possible without the cooperative efforts between volunteers and donors. Both agencies would like to thank our hosts for providing a welcoming venue and to all of the supporters who helped make this event a success!

Members of the Onondaga County Sheriff's Office Corrections and Custody Departments were “Freezin for a Reason” this morning at the 12th annual Oneida Shores Polar Plunge. This event has become an annual tradition, raising money for Special Olympics New York-.

The “Sub Zero COs”, who plunged for the third straight year in honor of fallen Officer Mark Kaminski, combined with the OCSO team to raise more than $2,500.

The forecast called for 55-degrees, but a stiff wind out of the West had other plans. Rain and a 15mph breeze brought a chill to the air and participants’ spirits as fundraisers and supporters got ready with hot chocolate, coffee, and donuts from Dunkin, as well as popcorn and live music. Special Olympics also received private donations of raffle items and offered merchandise to everyone in attendance. Eventually the rain let up, the wind died down, and at 1245 the Flame of Hope was lit and the parade of athletes, law enforcement, and plungers made its way toward a choppy Oneida Lake.

Attendees had a blast and the event was a success! Final numbers are not in, but with online donations and event-day sales, the 2018 Oneida Shores Polar Plunge raised over $75,000 for special olympic athletes.

Thank you to everyone who donated, supported, and/or attended the event!

Today we remember fallen Sheriff’s Deputy Glenn Searles, whose watch ended 15 years ago on November 29th, 2003.

Deputy Glenn Searles died in 2003 after a car lost control along Route 481 and struck him while he was helping a stranded motorist. Deputy Searles had served with the Onondaga County Sheriff's Department for two years, and had previously served as an investigator with the medical examiner's office. He was 31 years old when he was killed in the line of duty.

The incident was one of two similar incidents that led to New York State's Move-Over-Law signed in January 2011. The law was named for New York State Trooper Robert W. Ambrose and Deputy Glenn Searles.

The Onondaga County Sheriff's Office Corrections Department participated in “No-Shave November” as a fundraiser to benefit Upstate Golisano Children's Hospital. Over 60 officers raised a total of $7658, which went directly to the Upstate Foundation.

Contributions to the Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital put “money where the miracles are” and provide equipment, custom needs, research, and education. The hospital provides care to 17 different counties plus regions in PA and VT, accounting for over 100,000 pediatric visits each year.

The department would like to thank all of the nursing and developmental staff at Upstate for warming our hearts and giving us an outlet for this fundraiser.
