Burn Permits Now Required Through May 15
Now through May 15, 2027 burn permits are REQUIRED for outdoor burning. You can obtain a permit by visiting https://www.tn.gov/tnwildlandfire/prevention/safe-debris-burning/permits.html
If you live in the City of Crossville, a burn permit is ALWAYS required year round. For a City permit, please call Crossville Fire/Rescue at 931-484-6144.
It is important that outdoor burning safety be a priority. You can do your part by following these tips:
Get a Burn Permit: In Tennessee, burn permits are required during the applicable fall-to-spring burning season. Check current requirements and obtain your permit before burning.
Check the Weather: Never burn on windy days or when conditions are dry enough for fire to spread quickly.
Clear the Area: Remove dry leaves, grass, brush, and other flammable materials from around your burn pile.
Keep Water Nearby: Have a garden hose, water supply, shovel, and other tools ready to control or extinguish the fire.
Never Leave a Fire Unattended: Stay with your fire until it is completely extinguished.
Keep Fires Small and Controlled: Burn only manageable amounts of yard debris, and add material gradually.
Maintain a Safe Distance: Keep burning piles away from buildings, vehicles, fences, trees, power lines, and other combustible materials.
Watch for Flying Embers: Sparks can travel beyond your burn area and ignite dry grass, leaves, or nearby structures.
Never Burn Hazardous Materials: Never burn household garbage, plastics, tires, chemicals, or other materials that can release toxic fumes.
Know When to Stop: If wind picks up or conditions become unsafe, extinguish the fire immediately if you can do so safely.
Make Sure It's Completely Out: Douse the fire with water, stir the ashes, and wet the pile again until everything is cool to the touch.
Follow Local Restrictions: Check for active burn bans or additional restrictions before lighting any outdoor fire.
